Penn (40k) vs Mich (67k)

Postby absolutazn87 » Thu Apr 07, 2011 10:07 pm

So I'm trying to decide between Penn with 40k scholly and Mich with 67k.

I have an engineering background and want to work in IP/tech and/or venture capital, more transactional side and not patent prosecution. I'm from NYC and would love to come back to NYC to work but I'm also interested in California.

Things I really like about Penn:

- their cross-disciplinary programs like the Wharton certificate
- clinics - specifically the entrepreneurship legal clinic and their new IP clinic
- i really loved it there when i visited. the campus was gorgeous (went to undergrad in NYC), and really liked the feel of the place and everyone I met there.

With regards to Michigan, there wasn't anything I really strongly disliked. I've been living in NYC the past six years and I'm used to and prefer cities to small towns. I didn't like that Michigan felt very undergrad-y and the fact that most people live in the lawyer's club dorm with shared bathrooms and a small twin bed does turn me off. I did have a great time at the ASW and really liked the students and other admits. I feel like both schools have a pretty similar "collegial" culture which is a plus for both.

Frankly, I do feel like Penn's programs and clinics tilt more toward my interests and I liked it more there. The question is do you guys feel like it's worth the extra 27k since they are peer schools.

Also, I am going to try to see if Penn can up my scholly but I don't imagine it can go higher than say..45k?

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds
Are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops that's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true

Nice poem!

OP: You sound like you would enjoy Penn more than Michigan. Follow your heart, man. In addition, graduating from either school will put you in a position that 27K over three years seems like a drop in a bucket.

I think the difference is small enough that the personal preference towards Penn could be worth it.

You clearly love Penn, and that really just isn't that big of a difference in COA. I'd ask Penn to up the scholly as much as possible, but I'm voting Penn.
