Which Law school in Miami?

I'm choosing between UM and FIU.

UM is the most expensive school in one of the most expensive areas of the state of Florida.
Literally, the price of just tuition at UM equals the total price of everything I'd ever pull out my wallet for at FIU ~39k v. ~15k.

My main concern here is the cost as I'll be going 100% debt on this one.
Clearly UM is the better school, but would it be worth it?

Your post is confusing. How much are you paying for year at each?

39k per year vs. 15k per year strictly tuition.

You need to retake then. You've got some bad choices.

retake, then go to UF or go to FIU for free. or t-14 if you get the LSAT score and want BigLaw.

FIU I believe has a pretty firm 3.0 GPA floor. I'm going to assume you have at least a 3.0. I have a 3.0. I am going to UF in the fall. Please retake.

I scored 85th percentile on the LSAT and achieved a 3.2 while enjoying college at FSU in Finance. I have no regrets and regardless theres not much I can do about that now...

Back to topic, any opinions?

You can retake the LSAT.

FIU - Low monetary risk, low reward. High probability of never getting a legal job, aka being in the same position you are now, but $45,000 in debt. You can get a job with your UG degree and pay off debt like that with not too much difficulty, however.

UM - High risk, mediocre reward. Better chance at legal jobs (still decent chance of joblessness), but a very very high probability (probably 80% chance or more) of not getting a job that will effectively let you pay back you loan debt.

FIU I guess, but I'd retake, reapply, and try to get into UF.

This statement is a bit presumptuous.

I don't get this anyway.

85th percentile is 162, right?

With 3.2/162, applying to FSU would have been a smart call. Also shocked that didn't draw at least some money from Miami.

I had a 3.2/166 and got no dough from Miami.

Miami doesn't give out much monies. hence their ranking.

Goddamnit it is hard not to be a cynical jackass ITT

And go to UM, it has a simply sterling reputation throughout Miami and 37k isn't that much, I mean look at how many other students pay it!

I find that shocking as well. With how much more focus schools put on GPA, I definitely would have expected you to get a sizable chunk (I got 72k with 3.4/163).

164 LSAT and urm here with zero aid. My GPA is abhorrent, so I wasn't really expecting anything - from anywhere. I think the key to Miami aid was applying before Jan 1st. They seem to bomb people with 24k merit aid packages early, and then promptly run out of funds. I've been complaining to them for weeks now, showing them competing offers from higher ranked schools, and nothing.

According to the school's staff, all the funding has been given out and they've actually overextended the scholarship funding as many students won't enroll.

Any thoughts on actually which school to attend, UM full cost vs FIU full cost? Would choosing FIU be a bad move?

I'm in a similar situation, I have a 75% ride to a high T3 school but nothing from Miami. I was considering the same thing as you, Miami is MUCH more attractive both resume and education wise, but honestly, it's not worth it. As was posted above, Miami uses 24k schol's up on everyone before Jan. 1st. I applied Jan. 10th and funds had already been awarded. My decision was taking a job in Chicago working the trading floor and I will re-apply next year when the application first opens up. 24k*3=72k this is enough money to make me put off law school for one year.

Woah, haha. I never thought of that. $72k is enough to make me put off law school for a year. Plus that gives plenty of time for retaking LSAT countless times.

I wouldn't say "countless" times, but it definitely gives you the opportunity to retake. I would definitely hold off for a year and then apply to the same schools early in the cycle (assuming you don't improve your lsat). I would also shoot an app to Florida and see what happens. Good luck!
