Northwestern sticker | GW $$ | UIUC $$$

Postby enron123 » Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:49 am

So my cycle is winding down still waiting on a couple of things but likely to be a selection among these:

- Northwester COA 220k
- GW COA 110k
- UIUC COA 60k

I'm a bit debt averse but since I am posing the question I am not terribly so. Not exactly sure what I want to do with my career but am interested in the contractual structuring of public private partnership agreements and also possibly in being an ADA (maybe I've watched too many courtroom dramas). Working in Illinois and the DC area would be good places for the first and I think but obviously can be very mistaken that location isnt a big consideration for the second.

In terms of living environment during law school I put them on an equal footing in that what I would lose in networking opportunities at UIUC I would gain in less distracted (shiny things very much take my attention).

Leave me a comment if you vote but really all input is much appreciated, thanks!

Congrats on t-14. I'd consider UIUC because it is so much cheaper and still a well regarded school if you have qualms on 200k (!) debt at Northwestern. Northwestern is Northwestern though and will probably open more doors.

I'd toss GW out, because if you are going to take six figures out for law school, why not take the full plunge and go to the top 14. Especially as GW and UIUC are so close in the rankings and Illinois would be cheaper.

I'd take Illinois, but gun your ass off son. There are some signs Chicago as a law market is recovering. Getting a degree from Illinois for damn near free is a good opportunity.

Thanks surprised to hear someone from NU say take Illinois. Interesting, I assume gun my ass off is finish in the Top 5 - 10%.

I was thinking that it would be more valuable to finish Top 20% at UIUC than Top 50% NU but...

I was a little brief in my first post, I'll elaborate a little more now. NU beats UIUC by a lot in terms of hiring for big law. For ADA I think that margin is a lot smaller. But still about 40% of NU grads miss big law, and a lot of them don't have amazing options. With only 60K in debt you'll be fine even taking a crappy law job. With 220K you are fucked if you don't get something that either pays enough to pay for loans, or qualifies for loan assistance.

If you had said you wanted big law 100%, I would have said NU. But you don't quite know what you want. That means you shouldn't wrack up 220K in debt. That severely limits your freedom of choice in your career. At least for a while.

You cannot guarantee your class rank by gunning. There are people who breeze into top 10% and some people who work extremely hard in the bottom 10%. The only help I can give is learn how to write a law school exam. It's an important skill.

Appreciate the point of view and the more detailed post!

Any advice on how to prepare to write a law school exam that prior to law school or in the early part?

Read getting to maybe, and realize there isn't really a correct answer.

I was in a similar situation with NU and UIUC, and for me the correct answer was NU. My decision was based in large part on NU's LRAP (I want PI/govt), the better career options I would get at NU, and the fact that in college I took a big scholly at a school I ended up hating - for law school, I wanted to go somewhere I was really going to love.

Honestly, you can't really lose in this situation, you just need to figure out what is right for you.

And finally, I second what DF said re: class rank. There is really no way of predicting where you're going to end up at either school, regardless of your numbers/scholarship.
