NYLS $ vs. Suffolk vs. NESL $$

I'm currently waitlisted at Penn State. Going to send out the LOCI tomorrow.

Obviously not T-14 material, but nevertheless need to make decisions and the new Rankings are confusing me.

NYLS:$7500: according to US News the starting salary is $160,000 (private sector) is that a typo? Seriously tempting me to go. I know it's NY location, and I'm assuming it's the Suffolk of NY (or vice versa). Costs of living are obviously ridiculous.

Suffolk: sticker... but asking for $ so I have to wait. Starting salary is $70,000

NESL: $20,000. Folks are trying to get me to go there because of $$ but I really don't want to.

Even if I get into Penn State, the starting salary is $60,000. I suppose just make the best of my opportunities and stay at the top?

Thanks.

Those salaries only represent a tiny fraction of the class.

Yeah, I'm aware. I just need help making a decision.

Suffolk has the best reputation out of those three.

Yes, noted. But I just want opinions on where to go, not about salaries and such.

Well you seem to only focus on that one aspect (you repeat it over and over again), so you didn't seem to be aware of this.

And this:

is harder than it sounds.

Okay. So which school should I go to? I'll be studying Corporate Law.

Okay, tell me a little about the companies you've worked for and the positions you've held.

Haha. I'm just graduating from my Undergrad from McGill University....not too much real world experience besides the odd summer jobs for Psychology Labs and working for a non-profit organization.

Hate to be a dick OP, but you'll be studying contracts, torts, evidence and con law like the rest of us. And then you'll be fighting for the scraps of the legal market, like the rest of us (at T2 schools). If you want to practice in Boston, go to Suffolk. If you want to practice in NYC, retake the LSAT and reapply or just move to NYC and try to get a job that way. The odds of you finding gainful employment are (no kidding) probably the same. Plus, you won't be crushed by student loan debt.

GL!

Also, retake. None of the options you have are worth the price you'll be paying.

I want to start this Fall and I wouldn't know what else to do for the rest of the year if I re-take the LSAT. I want to start this year and the folks are pushy about going to law school this year.

IBTthread gets out of hand with the bashing of OP, who will bravely fight back, but will fall to the overwhelming force of TLS groupthink.

Tell "the folks" that your current job prospects with those schools are abysmal and that you could benefit by taking a year (or two!) off, getting a job, studying like hell to take a test that's incredibly teachable, and then either a) getting scholarships from your current options, or b) getting into vastly superior law schools.

I'm sure the folks will be a lot less happy when you move back into their house in 3 years due to unemployment and 6 figure debt.

So please explain. Why should a law firm hire you to practice Corporate Law? I am perplexed.

NYLS is a joke. That's immediately out.

I'd retake if I were you and take a year off, because I doubt you studied as hard as you could. Anyone can break 160, if they study enough.

But if you are stubborn and don't want to, I'd go with Suffolk, it has the best rep out of the 3 (meaning it is the only school out of the 3 that's not a complete joke) Seriously, think about your future and just thug it out and retake one more time.

Also, I would apply to schools like U of Montana and U of Maine, if you don't mine living in these regions for the rest of you're life. You're shooting for big regions, which is not wise if you can't break at least a top 30, preferably a T14. If I were you, I would shoot for more isolated regions where you wouldn't mind working. Marquette is another one for Michigan/Milwaukee area. Think about the decision you are making before you sink 150K into NYLS or another TTT is a huge market.

Telling OP to retake to get into a t-14 when they only have options in tier 3 is kind of ridiculous. How many of you guys started with practice LSAT's in the 140s? Let's be honest, here.

A better question would be would it be worth it for OP to wait a year and study their butt off to get into Brooklyn Law School or maybe maybe Cardozo at sticker. I'd say yes if they would go to LS. 10% shot at paying back the loans > 1%.

Noone said that, re-read.

I said if you want a big region you have to break into a Top 30. However, if you can't break into that group of schools, you are better off shooting for a T2 or TTT in a smaller, more isolated market. Like: Montana, Marquette, Maine. I would retake and see what you can do. OP doesn't have a 140 LSAT, he probably has a 150's score, which can be easily knocked up into at least the high 150's-160's which will open up money at these schools and the T2.

You are an idiot. I never told him to go to NYLS. You are a freaking 0L! What do you know about anything? How old are you? How many people can just pick up their lives and move to freaking MONTANA? Maybe a 22 year old 0L like yourself with no real world life experience.

Dante, I have more real world life experience than your fucking granddaddy. Don't trip. I am not telling him to go to Montana. I said pick a fucking TTT in an isolated region that he wouldn't mind living in. I don't care if you want to stay in NYC for the rest of your life, you never ever should go to NYLS. OP, should retake first, if he is stubborn pick a TTT in an isolated region.
