Is Emory really worth the cost?

Postby SrLaw » Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:11 am

Right now these are my "best" options. I am a 167/3.4 applicant and not wanting to pay sticker for any school. I would eventually like to go into commercial real estate and operating my own firm.

We should talk based upon the bolded. But are these yearly figures or total?

Look at emory's most recent employment stats in USNews. Answer to the original question is "no."

No way OP. If you want to open your own firm, then you want to start out with as little debt as possible. Thus, the full tuition scholarship from Indiana already sounds like the best option. And then you will also have an MBA coming from there. I'd assume one who opens his own firm would be wise to have some business know-how, so that dual degree is a good idea. So full tuition + MBA + avoiding going to Emory :) = smart decision

If the stipulations at Indiana are truly just maintain enrollment/academic good standing, and considering that you want to open your own firm, then Indiana. Absolutely.

Each scholarship is per year.

Absolutely not. The school is way overpriced and the only people the degree impresses are Emory alums. There are about 50 schools in the peer range or above that have an equal or better amount of "prestige". That's 20,000 or so law students in one class from 50 schools that are on equal footing.

I would avoid.

Being a lawyer allows you to broker real estate deals, which saves you a brokers fee on real estate deals. It also gives you a solid foundation in understanding contracts, lease agreements, etc, which is another bonus. Also, if it's free (IUB), then why not? At the very least, the law degree is a good fall back if real estate doesn't work out. I know a commercial developer who has a law degree and says it is very useful in his daily work.

OP...go to IUB, but be prepared to lose your shirt going into development right now. Not too many lendors looking to finance big projects ITE. Also, what market?

I'd say with your goals, Indiana is a no brainer. You're looking to do something where the prestige of you law degree isn't super important, and IU's MBA is the best of the 3.

Go to IUB. Emory's got name recognition but the Atlanta market is pretty bad right now and you won't be high on the totem pole in other markets.

Emory has great name recognition to firms and lay people. Its an excellent school and will remain so. Clearly dont avoid a region if you want to live there because of a universal economic downturn. Like the markets it too will fluctuate. Please avoid using the USNEWS rankings as a metric for judging quality. IMO this magazine creates this ranking system to generate anxiety and generate discussion and hits to their website. Its a great marketing strategy which ultimately serves no one but themselves.

I'm down to the same three options as you but with slightly different scholarships.

Like you, I'm also considering the MBA program at IU:B.

For what it's worth, I'm leaning toward the JD/MBA at IU:B but I don't want to finalize this decision until after the spring law day.
