How much do cycles reflect the most recent rankings?

I'm basically asking because I'm going to be applying next fall and felt borderline at some T14 schools (like Michigan). Will people's chances change drastically (perhaps hyperbole) as a result of the newest rankings? Or is beating last year's medians at schools still a relatively safe bet for admission?
