From what I hear a lot of 1Ls go back to their hometowns their first summer. They say that Michigan is a national school and sends people everywhere. But I mean, I'd take anything from law students at Michigan with a grain of salt (they seem to be as in love with Michigan as I am as an undergrad and I usually make it sound much better than it actually is for some reason).

Is it a stupid choice to want to ED to U of Michigan with the expectation that I can get an internship with a firm in LA for each summer/end up with a job in LA after LS?
no.

double check what kind of placement rates they have in LA. get anecdotal evidence to support. i think you have options if you can get into Michigan. and you never know... maybe you won't be so set on LA by the time you graduate.

where do you think i can get this info? should i just call them?

and no, i'm set on LA. i grew up in southern california, and I don't plan on leaving my family/friends. And i'm not a fan of cold weather, haha.

check out michigan's site and look around for "job placement" or career statistics something like that and/or check out the TLS summary on M: http://www.top-law-schools.com/michigan-law-school.html
and no, i'm set on LA.
curious... if you're set on LA, and would have the ability to clear an M acceptance, i would suggest dominating at UCLA or USC and being absolutely set w/ your choice of firms in LA. thoughts?

i go to a cal state right now, and i felt like coming here was "settling". i didn't get to go to a school that i wanted. i feel like law school is my second chance to go outside my bubble, and i think it's an opportunity i won't get again. i don't care too much for ucla or usc, but i'll go there if i don't get michigan. i just feel like they're too competitive for no reason. i think i'd have to work harder at ucla/usc than i would have to at michigan. not that i don't plan on working hard, i just think that it'll be a better atmosphere.

also, i feel that i should mention that i want to get into entertainment law, which is tough, i know. i researched it a little and saw that the "best" schools for entertainment law were obviously ucla/usc, but also michigan, columbia, and nyu. this plays into my thought process a bit too.

cool. in the end, attend the school you feel is right so long as you're not making a stupid decision.

best wishes

no advice? i'm not sure if i'm making a stupid decision, which is why i asked if this was a stupid choice, in my original post.

with a 3.2 GPA, Michigan is going to be very difficult to get into, even ED.

Hope you rocked the LSAT -- like 175+

yeah :/ in a different post i said that i've changed my dedication to school and i'm aiming for 4.0s for the next 3 semesters, hopefully i'll have a 3.66 by the time i apply. i'm testing at 170 so i should be decent for lsat.

I go to Michigan and I'm going back to LA when I graduate. It isn't difficult at all...Michigan has one of the highest percentages of people going to CA out of the non-CA top 14 schools.

But as the previous poster mentioned, you aren't going to get in at Michigan (with a 3.2 GPA) even with early decision, unless you absolutely destroy the LSAT. Even then, you might not get in. Same goes for UCLA.

above sounds like truth.

let's worry about a Michigan ED decision node when the numbers are settled

which is why my title says "extremely hypothetical" not "extremely probable"

1. FUCK MICHIGAN
2. You're basing a decision on where you hope to be working in 3 years time. There could better offers. That offer could be bullshit. Even if you get the job it could be the worst job you've ever had in your life.
3. You'd rather be in Michigan than LA?

You need to reassess the situation from another perspective.

are you really going to harvard?? damn son

i get what you're saying, and you're right. i'll keep my options open. jw what would you do? i'd like more of your perspective. also why so much michigan hate.

No I don't attend Harvard. I have to change that. In fact I didn't even apply. I was so unimpressed with the alumni I was turned off of applying to that school.

I'm heavily biased against Michigan, or any other state so absurdly economically depressed.

you know, i believe what you're saying about harvard. i don't feel like going to a top ivy means you have substance. what school are you going to, if you don't mind me asking?

so you think it's better to suck it up and aim for ucla/usc? i don't think i'll have the gpa, even after i bump to a 3.6, however.

I can't answer your GPA question accurately enough. But alternatively there's Pepperdine, Loyola, Southwestern, etc, etc.. There are A LOT of law schools in california. What turns you off UCLA/USC?

I'm still waiting on four or five schools to decide on my apps before I even think about making a decision. I'm certainly in no hurry anymore. Some of these apps have been out there since mid November.

I paid for UCLA and Pepperdine apps, just got rejected by UCLA a couple of days ago. Oh well. Everything else out there is on fee waiver, and to be honest I can't even remember. each one was in a different state.

FYi, I even had a fee waiver in Alabama, so I applied, and the school actually withdrew my application without my knowledge. They probably think I'd be too dangerous with a JD.
