American lawyers in the near future. I would also think that Russian NGOs aren't going to want to take on foreign lawyers for fear of having the foreign agent label officially slapped on, and opened up to all the trouble that brings.
yeah, i'd been reading about the 'foreign agent' business. sounds like with those obstacles plus the various difficulties of the international field generally make this virtually impossible.

I have seen more openings for specialists in Central Asia and all the random stan countries. It's really hard to find people willing to go there. I have a friend who is a specialist on development and human rights issues in Kazakhstan and he always gets offers with the UN and big NGOs to go to random places.

But really, do you want to spend a lot of time in Kyrgyzstan?

Is South Asia a particularly tough area to break into?

Well all regions are tough. I think the issue with South Asia is that unless you get hired by a big NGO or the UN, you'll be on a local salary and make a pittance.

perhaps that's meant to be rhetorical, but i'll take it seriously anyway. i wouldn't have any problems with the -stans, i'd just assumed it'd be almost like choosing a region anywhere else in the world in that they'd necessitate new language study, new history, etc. i suppose this would be the time to figure out so i could get to studying.

WT, do you know anything about hiring for international clerkships for US JDs? Interested in the Supreme Court of India.

I had an offer to work with them through networking. I think you have to know somebody. I think they're very prestige obsessed though.

Are 2 page resumes OK for IHR jerbs as they are for fellowships?

P.S. Happy 7th anniversary on this site, WT!

Oh my god I feel old.

For any IHR job if you don't have enough material to fill 2 pages, you are probably not getting the job.

Understanding the essence of International Human Rights, more than any degree, is a necessity! Owing to the fact that we share a conscience with globalised world, I think ignoring or avoiding 'RIGHTS' is nothing less than an abuse. I came across this detailed post and thought of sharing it SPAM

sorry to intrude again, one more question.

are there any areas of russia that are similarly underserved? or is it really just wise to avoid russian-speaking areas altogether given the supply of native speakers in top law schools?

What's the general attitude toward tattoos in the IHR community? I have a huge one spanning from the front of my hip to my shoulder and across my back, but it's easily concealable. I'm considering getting another one, maybe at the top of my shoulder/upper part of my arm or on my lower leg (I realize the latter will be trickier). None of the IHR people I've met had visible tattoos, but does it seem to be a dealbreaker?

It depends on the job, but in general I think as long as you don't tattoo your face, it's fine.

Actually if your face tattoo is somehow representative of your religion or some kind of indigenous cultural belief, then tattoo your face. You will have instant credibility and will more easily get hired as an expert on that culture.

Thanks! In that case, I'll cover myself in tattoos from all different, conflicting ideologies, so I look like a citizen of the world.

Hi all- I have a question about applications for IHR fellowships. Some places ask for a cover letter, as opposed to a personal statement or a specific prompt. Now, I know the rule is cover letters should always be one page. However, it seems strange to limit a cover letter to 3 paragraphs where you can't get into more personal passion/ planned projects for these very specific fellowships.

For example, the Finberg and Aryeh Neier last month only asked for cover letters, and same with the CRR upcoming fellowship. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Should we stick to just 1 page? Is it OK to expand to 2 pages?

1 page

If it's project based there should be a separate place to talk about project goals.

I've never seen a 2 page cover letter that wasn't really longwinded and that is not a good thing.

Wow. That view almost, but not quite, makes up for the rest of the things about Kyrgyzstan.
