Miami - $0 vs. Penn State - $45,000

So my whole family is in Florida including my girlfriend and Miami was my top choice with my grades (3.21, 160) but Penn State is offering me $45,000 over three years.

What to do...will deferring get me any money at Miami next year?

I mean retaking would get you more money. Miami at sticker will cost you close to 200k, a horrendous investment given Miami's job stats. Penn State is an ok option with that money, but it won;t get you back into the miami market. Have you applied to any of the lower ranked florida schools?

This. Without strong ties to other markets, Penn State will barely get you out of Harrisburg/Lancaster/York.

Take Penn State and NEVER look back. If you do well, you can come back to the Miami market. You may have to market yourself a bit, but it is defintely doable.

NOTE: I attended University of Miami law school and didn't like it. The classes can be HUGE. There was no nurturing at all at the time. Career services was a joke. We had to hussle to get our own jobs and make our own opportunites. The only great things was the weather and hot girls. However, since we law students worked hard, we didn't get to appreciate these benefits anyway. My adivce, take the money from Penn State. I wish my son had good enough LSATs to get in there.

try upitt or case western. At least they somewhat have a home market.

Even then seriously reconsider going to LS. I have a friend from Upitt LR top 5% with no job. He said that a "sizable" number of students on LR also have no jobs lined up.

I wouldn't do Penn State ($1,000,000.00).

So St. Thomas Law School in Florida offered me $30,000 per year, and $30,000 each of the following years if I remain in the top 25% (90k total). So the question is how important going to a school like UM or Penn State that has a recognizable name and most likely a better education?

Retake. Shoot for Vandy, UT, or a full ride to a Florida school.

Neither will get you very far in Florida. I second buckilaw's plan.

Is it possible to get money after transferring? I know everyone thinks they will go to law school and excel and be top of the class, but if I were to do well in my first year could I transfer to Miami or another Florida school and get money or does a transfer basically mean that you will pay sticker?

Never go to law school banking on a transfer.

I realize that this is not the best option, but is it possible to get any money after transferring or not? And do you say this because it is very difficult to transfer?

I know u are proud of ur scholly, but those numbers are worthless. How about telling us how much each one will cost. Ppl always do this and it really annoys me

No its not possible. What incentive could they possibly have for offering u a scholly? Depends how high u want to go. Generally between top ten percent and top 1 percent, if u want to make a significant leap.
