+1, I'd like to know as well.

Also, how basketball friendly is each school? I hear that CLS's gym is utter crap :(

i dont play basketball, but i am at Coles a lot and there is almost always a game or two going on. i know a bunch of 1Ls who play multiple times a week and have no problem finding games. as for deans cup - its certainly competitive to get on the team (i speak only for nyu, and will avoid any snide comment about CLS' deans cup performances). i can't remember when tryouts were, but from what i heard there were quite a few good players. sorry, i can't speak more to it - i know next to nothing about basketball. i think there are some deans cup lurkers on TLS who may be more informative.

It's good to know that the courts won't be filled with scrubs in law school :D
(if there are any courts at CLS). And isn't NYU somewhat close to Rucker Park?

this thread reminds me of Harvard vs. Yale debate, thread-decades ago lol

http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=100042&start=50
and in this case, i think the poster with most maturity and analyses won the debate.

but as for me, hands down - Columbia would be my pick just because I am a prestige whore.

I am extremely interested in the ease at picking up a game of basketball at Columbia. And how worthwhile the weight room is too. This is pretty much my top priority in terms of picking what law school I go to, now that I think about it.

Well, with Columbia, you get to benefit from the surrounding ghettos of Harlem illustrious neighborhood of Morningside Heights. But I've been talking to students from both. The general consensus seems to be that NYU students are happier, for what that's worth.

also keep in mind that for 2l/3l, a large portion of your big lecture classes (read: corporations, anti-trust, etc.) are going to made up of shitastic LLMs, which also helps to mitigate the differences in the student bodies as far as the class atmosphere goes.

AH, now see, if there's one thing even bitter NYU/CLS rivals can come together on, it's the fact that LLMs are lame. But thank god for them; you always know you won't have the worst grade in the class as long as they're around.

Harlem: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl= ... 44&bih=669

Your "survey" isn't worth a dime when it comes from a quasi-racist douche.

I may not want to live in Morningside Heights/Harlem, but there is no question that the area that law students would be living in is nice and not at all sketch.

My bf lived in Harlem for a long time and trust me, its been a long time since Harlem was a "scary neighborhood."

CLS 1L and Brooklyn resident here. I didn't want to live in either Morningside Heights or the Village, so I was going to stay put whether I went to NYU or CLS. I should allow 1h30m for the commute, door-to-door, but with the early morning classes (before 9am) this semester, I've been allowing 1h20 (and showing up a minute or so late to class).

When I'm exhausted in the subway during the early morning or evening rush, I start wishing I had chosen NYU so I could cut my commute in half. But I do get a lot of reading done on the trains (especially when I stay local, so I can get a seat and have space to hi-lite), so at least it's time well spent.

It's definitely doable. Just depends how much you love Brooklyn. For me, it's worth it in the end. And if you live close to the 2/3, the commute should be pretty easy (compared to mine, at least)!

For others interested in Brooklyn, my COL here is definitely cheaper than in Morningside Heights (used to live up there a while back), in terms of both housing and overall expenses.

We could, except for the teensy fact that he referred to the "ghettos of Harlem" in the present tense - and Harlem today is definitely not a ghetto.

It's refreshing to hear that people can take a moderately not-so-PC joke so well nowadays. I'm also glad that supposedly "non-racist" people think that living in the ghetto today is like living in Warsaw during WWII. Because, you know, that's a very generous way to interpret what happens when you congregate a bunch of impoverished people of the same nationality or race together in a neighborhood.

Although, to be fair, now most of Harlem has been forcefully gentrified. But enough about this, me and my fellow ghetto buddies in the South Side of Chicago need to go out and party like it's Poland in 1943.

Chill. You both. Way to get super-defensive over nothing, both of you. Please tell me which of these two schools you both decide to go to, because then, if you both go to the same one, I'll know to go to the other one. CLS lawyers = 47 (20 associates)
NYU lawyers = 31 (15 associates)

 even a firm started by 4 NYU grads would rather hire more CLS grads

The problem with looking simply at how many people are from each school is that you miss out on the fact that different schools are going to attract students with different goals in life. There are only 18 graduates from Yale practicing at this firm and I certainly don't think you would say that choosing Columbia over Yale would give you a greater shot at getting a job there. I would guess that the people that go to Yale simply choose to do other things; likewise, those who go to NYU might be more interested in other things and choose NYU for that reason.

You seem to care a lot about prestige but honestly, these are numbers that people made up using arbitrary criteria. Just ask Cooley, they think they're the #1 law school in the nation (see Yale thread lol)

Using Wachtell to compare employment prospects and Nazis/ghettos to describe Harlem?

Nice to see this thread has taken a rational turn.

It's really that there is nothing substantial to gain. Everyone pretty much knows the deal.. cls may place slightly better in firms, nyu might be slightly better for pi, village is usually considered > than morningside, cls > nyu for prestige, for some reason ppl say nyu students are happier which is just trolling, etc, etc.

You really just have to go visit both schools then choose the one which gives you more money
