T-14 schools...cost for apartments

Postby chrissyc » Sat Jan 08, 2011 12:11 am

Anyone who lives in an area that's within a reasonable distance from any school in the T14....can you

1. list the school
2. give the average price for a 1 bedroom (total rent)

I live a 15 minute walk (max) from Penn Law and pay $615/month for a studio.

I'm guessing that's West of campus?

Yep, and if I was willing to live 8 blocks farther away from the school, I could be paying like $500-$550/month.

On behalf of NYU and probably CLS students, what is "reasonable"? Walking distance? 20-minute or under commute? Longer commute but a lot of people live there anyway? etc.

Duke. I live 2 miles from the law school. I live in what I would call a "large" studio (full kitchen, partitioned bedroom, walk in closet). My complex has a swimming pool, tennis court, and gym. Central heat/AC. $530/month.

Michigan. My apartment next year is about a half mile from the law school for $550 (per person, three bedroom). Bit of a dive though.

Pretty sure I'll be paying at least double what most of y'all are paying next year. :(

10 minute drive from campus. 2 bedroom, 2 1/2 bathroom townhouse with backyard, living/dining room, etc. Over 1,150 square feet. 800 a month. Duke FTW.

800 total. Place was built in 2005 so it's quite new and nice.

Welcome to the Southeast. Me and the SO are currently looking at stuff around Cambridge and it looks like getting a 1 br apt. through Harvard for ~1600/month(with all utilities) may actually be a somewhat fair deal. F the northeast.

I did my undergrad at NYU and later lived up by Columbia. I'd say near NYU, for a livable one-bedroom you'll pay at least $1600, though that still won't get you much. As for me, I shared a really crappy 2-bedroom, and we were still paying close to $1200 each.

You can get a somewhat better place for less up around Columbia. Not sure about 1-bedrooms specifically, but my roommate and I were paying $2200 total for a pretty nice 2-bedroom apartment, though the building/neighborhood were not stellar. That apartment actually happened to be in the same building Obama lived in when he went to school there... his was a one-bedroom on the floor below that actually went up for rent while we were living there, but unfortunately I can't remember how much it was going for.
