Can UMich take me somewhere warm?

Postby lisjjen » Fri Jan 07, 2011 7:48 pm

My thoughts on this keep bouncing all over the place, but I keep coming back to digging Texas. However, I just had my mentor advise me to go to the highest ranked school I can get into and then I talked to a friend who works for HLS recruitment and he told me pretty much the same thing. But as with all things, I try to take them with a grain of salt.

Consider yourselves a grain of salt. All I know is, I've had enough of the cold, and one of the reasons I want to go to Austin is because I could be sitting outside in my flip flops right now. I know wherever I go to school, I'll have to work in a big market to pay my loans back, but I'd rather work in Houston or Dallas than Manhattan anyways.

That being said, UMich has a fantastic reputation. But how long is that likely to last (I hear all sorts of chatter about their rankings slipping, and I'm scared by the fact that they don't post their income stats) and could that reputation take me to say... San Diego?

Do you have ties to this hypothetical warm place?

If not, it's gonna be rough.

...and this discussion could be expanded to similarly ranked schools I might very well get into but haven't heard back from yet.

Texas could be USC, Vanderbilt, etc.

UMich could be Northwestern, Duke, etc.

Nope. That was what I was looking for insight into. Austin already is a "hypothetical warm place" but I was wondering if UMich's T14ness would still make it a better call.

Everything on TLS seems to point to Texas firms looking at you funny, wondering why you want to work in Texas and not being impressed with your "because of the sun, bro" answer.

I mean it's not just the sun. They're going to give me a healthy scholarship in a vibrant city called the "Silicon Hills" (I want to work with startups). Also, something about it being T15 with a near perfect reputation in its region, which happens to be a state with a healthy economy. The sun/music/food is nice too, but that is secondary.

But I want to be realistic. Maybe UMich would give me a better shot at working with startups if I'm just willing to tolerate the weather for 3 years.

Basically this, especially for Texas.

Just curious where you're getting the UMich rankings slipping thing from.

What I was saying was that if you go to a T14, with no ties to Texas, SoCal, etc, I would not expect to get a job there.

Now if you really like UT, and you've already got this nice scholarship with them, I don't see anything wrong with taking UT so you can work in Texas.

At what point does it stop being this?

And I'm not asking sarcastically. Would T5 be better? Would different T10s, like Penn be better? Texas is just an option, but it's a hell of an option. If not Texas, than Cali.

OK. I just made an executive decision. I want to work in either Texas or Cali when I get out.

I don't think it ever stops being that. Maybe at HYS, but then again I don't think so.

The reason being is that firms don't trust that you won't bolt the moment you get a job elsewhere. They do not trust that you - someone who has never lived there, didn't go to school there, has no family there - have a legitimate desire to work in that place. They believe that they are just a backup to you and being at a better ranked school isn't going to make them any more trusting of you.

I know, it was more tongue in cheek than anything else

The reason people think UMich is slipping is because of the OCI bloodbath stories.

I've heard HYS tossed around. Then again, if you get HYS, ALWAYS go to HYS.

We are close family friends with a Sr Partner for a multinational firm in the LA area, but I wouldn't want to push that too hard - I would be cut out of his family if it hurt his career.

I have a ton of connections in Boise, ID.

I am a member of a guild in W.O.W.

Also, when I heard that almost none of the 1Ls were working firm internships, that made me question the 200k too.

This I know. If the question is "Can HYS take you somewhere warm" the answer is yes. HYS can take you to the moon.

Want someplace warm? Gonna have to go to school someplace warm in all likelihood. You mobility is based on ties/prestige/grades. The only thing you can control right now are prestige and ties. Lots of Southern markets are insular and aren't that sensitive to prestige, even if you have the grades (not sure about Cali or the Southwest). So go somewhere you can establish decent ties.

Or, you could go to a prestigious school and try to work in the area 1L summer. Also a decent option.

oh wow.. didn't know they were that high.. That was many years ago though, and it doesn't really directly address the question about why people are apparently thinking they are likely to slip currently... Not to belabor the point though; I suppose based on that info alone it could be reasonable to think that over time the school will continue to slip in the future as a general trend..

Yes, but when you consider your odds... :P

Getting your dick chopped off and sewn back on can get you into porn, but you don't see me wielding a machete.
