I seriously think this has to do with not being aware that Cal = UC Berkeley. Everyone knows UCB just as "Berkeley," but when I talk to out-of-staters about Cal sports I always get some kind of surprised response along the lines of "Oh, Cal is Berkeley? I thought it was Cal State."

First of all, fencing? Women's soccer? GTFO with this ESPN-8 The Ocho-type shit. There are two sports that matter. Football and basketball, which latter only matters a little bit.

Secondly, ND's last championship was during the Reagan Administration. If someone is picking law schools NOW based on sports, I don't think that's too relevant. If we're going based on historical championships, they may as well pick Yale or Penn, since those 2 teams won pretty much every football championship in the 19th Century.

In the past couple years, it's Stanford hands-down, but overall Michigan is the better program.

It depends on if you're hoping to watch a lot of good sports in person or just want to root for a team that's good. I personally like to watch good competition between schools (i'll still be rooting for my UG sports teams). So you might look into how an overall conference is doing... in which case you might look into Big ten and Big 12 schools. Then depending on if you prefer basketball or football i'd go with Big East or SEC, respectively.

My love of hockey isn't the ONLY reason Michigan and Cornell (and, among safety-er schools, Minnesota and BC) are among my personal favorites, but it doesn't hurt.

i would agree with this, and if you consider overall sports programs plus quality of schools, there's no question the big 10 is the best

There are only five schools, IMO, in the t-14 that have any sort of nationally recognized sports program: SMVDG.

In ranking these five, it would come down to whether you really like one sport more than all the others or if you would rather go to a school that is fairly well-rounded or a combination of the two.

M is the best all around IMO.
MVDG all have pretty good basketball programs with D being superior.
SMV all have pretty good football programs with S and M being superior.

Thus, my rankings would be:

1) Duke (Being nationally dominant at one popular sport would be cool)
2) Michigan (solid all around and historically very good at football and basketball)
3) Stanford
4) Georgetown
5) Virginia
6) Rest of t-14

UCLA, USC and Texas should definitely be considered T14 for these purposes. If you remove any three of Cornell, Penn, U-Chicago HY and Columbia, there's room for those other "T-14-cusp" schools.

As someone from the Bay Area, I literally lol'd at the idea of Stanford being a better school for college athletic fanship than Michigan. Seriously, no one in the Bay Area cares. Why? Because we have 2 MLB franchises, 2 NFL franchises, and an NBA and NHL franchise. College sports are majorly crowded out and the fan base off campus just isn't that strong.

Now, Detroit has pro teams as well, but Ann Arbor's it's own deal and practically the entire state is batshit-crazy for Michigan football. 100,000+ in one stadium? Michigan hands down.

Duke is TCR for basketball but the nice thing about football is that you actually would have a chance to see a huge game (e.g., Ohio State or Michigan State) due to the stadium size. As a student, you have a snowball's chance in hell of coming within 500 feet of a Duke/UNC basketball ticket. My sister in law went to UNC UG, and they make you go cheer at all kinds of BS events like volleyball and swimming to accumulate points. If you did this religiously for 3-4 years, you had a chance (I stress chance) to accumulate enough points to get tix to ONE Duke/UNC game. Not sure if this is the case at Duke but I will note that Cameron Indoor Stadium is significantly smaller than UNC's building.

As a Cal fan I too noticed the egregious anti-Cal trolling ITT. However, it might help our case if Cal football didn't spectacularly and epically shit the bed every damn time they cracked the top 10. Consistently being 3rd or 2nd in the Pac-10 (11 now?) just isn't going to get you national recognition.

I'm a Cal fan too. I get it. But trust me, this is not an argument you want to have. On the collegiate sports landscape, Cal is somewhere in the T30 while Michigan is solidly T6.

Lets be serious, objectively, hands down, Michigan is a bigger football school than Cal and anyone who says other wise is an idiot. The only reason michigan had 2 bad years was because they changed there style of play pretty much 100%. Ryan Mallet (yea the heisman frontrunner right now) is a michigan transfer because Rich Rod came in. You know, a 6'7'' gun slinger doesnt quite fit into a spread offense like rich rods.

When your most famous moment on the grid iron is playing stanford when the band was on the field, you know your program is not quite as top flight as schools like Michigan. The stadium packs 113,000 people EVERY GAME regardless of who we play. Hail to the Victors baby.
