I'm bumping this post, since this is also a question I've thought about. I went to Temple as undergrad and am considering returning for law, but its ranking dissuades me. Then again, I'm from Palo Alto, and we're taught to pain over prestige.

If you want to work locally and you can't get into a T-14 go local. Why people immagine that national rankings matter out of the T-14 I never fail to wonder.

If you have ties to the area (real ties, as in "I grew up there," not "I have some family there" or "My girlfriend went there for spring break once and thought it was OK") and good grades, then I don't imagine you'd have much trouble finding work in Philly from a school like GW or BU.

You will, however, have to direct apply, because it's unlikely a lot of Philly schools will do OCI at GW/BU. Still, you'll probably be in the running top-25% for firms that would only sniff at the top-5-10% from a school like Temple.

So if I go to a T10 outside of the area and come back, I should direct apply to firms and should have an good shot of landing the better jobs? (in case I don't go to Penn)? I lived here for 20 years.

It would make no sense to go to a non-Penn T10 if you get into Penn, but if you don't, go to another T14, direct apply, and you should be fine.

I suppose that is TCR. It'd be hard to say no if I somehow slip into HYS though. And of course I could always not get in.

My impression is that HY will put you in a better position for Philly biglaw than Penn, perhaps S. Other than that, go to Penn.

HYS > Penn for any market. Otherwise, go to Penn.

Ya Penn is my 1st choice (since I can't really realistically call HYS "choice"). But options are always good, if money is involved. Thanks guys for the info.

S is suprisingly undervalued on the east coast and Philly is the home market. Also, more Philly firms do OCI at Penn. Its not as clearcut there as you make it out to be. Hell, Dechart and the other large Philly firms are basically joined at the hip with Penn. I can't tell you how many networking events and alumni mentors Penn has thrown at us involving Philly biglaw peoples and tons of the practitioners who lecture here are bigphillylaw senior people as well.

Then again, you probably just don't know what you're talking about, you poor thing.
