2) I don't suspect the majority, or even a plurality of Emory grads, are laterals from other southeastern posts.

3) Emory is a "credited" name in South Florida. I think outside of the usual suspects-- Harvard, etc. -- Duke/UVA/Emory are the three most revered schools among South Floridians. For college at least, it does seem like a disproportionate number of decently smart kids select into Emory because it's "close enough" and provides a solid education. I dont really know why there aren't more VULS people in South Florida; it sort of gets back to the conversation I was having with Rad Law. I think VULS grads self-selec into other, comparatively more southern markets (Atl, Texas, etc.)
1) I'm going to my own state school (not in Florida) w/$$$ (and I don't have to pay COL; my own debt will be well under 70k for 3 years; I also have immediate family connections in law that can basically guarantee that I will get employment; if all 3 of these things were not the case I would not have gone to law school). Planning on staying in the state, plus I had a shit GPA (sub 3.0) and my LSAT wasn't good enough (got a 165 as opposed to a 167-168; and that was already my re-take and I'm pretty sure my max) to get into any of the splitter schools with $$$ (and it's not like getting into WUSTL/UIUC/etc. would help me get a job in my state).

2) I like Emory and know plenty about it. My sister went there for undergrad. It has a great rep as does Vandy. But it's expensive. And my MO advice is generally "avoid expensive private schools" and "go to your own state school if you can't go T14 or get a scholarship".

3) I graduated from Miami undergrad back in '04-'05, so I still know a lot of people down there since several of my friends went to law school. That's the only reason I still follow the Florida legal markets.
Ah. Cool. Virtually everyone in my life has graduated from Miami in some capacity.

Lost in all this is the fact that working at a firm is a job and that like any other job, interviewing is required. Maybe the top 14 grads had no personality and social skills while the Emory grads had awesome personalities. Just a thought.
While this may indeed be true, it is far to speculative to have any merit as an argument or even a suggestion.

In addition, in the aggregate these sort of anomalies are virtually meaningless, especially considering it's near impossible to attach a value to "good interviewing skills"

I was down there last Oct. for the UM/OU game. It reminded me both of why I loved it and why I had no desire to go back there .

And I'm constantly reminded of why I both loathe and love this one horse town.

UM sucks. They cant handle being in the ACC. I hated this place last September/October. All the "swagger" talk and those stupid "Envy the past, fear the future" signs were annoying as hell. If they played in a tough conference from the onset, they would not have won all their national championships, but since they played in the Big East they always had an easy road. I predict a 7-5 season for them and an embarassing loss in a bowl game.

The only question I have is - how are you going to deal with the Chicago weather???
I only went to school there and it took me over 2 years for my body to adjust to winter again.

Thanks for this insightful post on the merits of UM's law school.

This is the only reason I never applied to Chicago. I don't think I could handle the weather.

I guess i'm weird in that I didn't even consider weather in where I applied. Just placement and academics.

Chicago weather isn't that bad. I prefer it over the brutal heat of Miami.

For people not in the know, miami weather is a big unfunny joke. It arrives in three variations:

1) Brutal, overpowerling heat. Heat so hot your clothes stick to you in weird, quasi-embarrasing ways. So hot your hair is perpetually all fucked up. So hot you laugh when hostesses at restaurants ask if you want to sit outside for virtually the entire year.

2) Flash flooding. Particularly rain that come sout of nowhere and affects ONLY the 10 ft. x 10 ft area you are currently occupying while leaving the immediate area surrounding you unaffected. Anyone who has lived in South Florida knows I'm not even remotely exaggerating the truth here.

3) If not 1) or 2), hurricanes that destroy your home and/or neighborhood. Or weaker ones that simply leave you without electricity for 2 to 3 weeks until FPL gets off its lazy, monopoly power ass and fixes the grid.

Brutal heat is not so brutal on the beach full of half naked people.

(at least until the oil gets here) :(

Yep. Love hate relationship with this city. Never lived elsewhere, seen snow once, ever. Big fan of 'cafe con leches' and 'cortaditos'.

BTW I think very few people know what UVA is down here (only the legal community?). Emory/Vandy/Georgetown rules in prestige. I get "why didn't you go to Duke/Georgetown?" alot! Hard to defend a state school like UVA

You'll be fine. Where'd you undergrad if you don't mind my asking? (Cool with PM'ing too if you'd rather not disclose publicly)
