Higher offer rates.
Fewer deferrals.
Less lathaming.

All of it kinda converges to make the truly quality firms look better than they used to, eh?
Aren't we sorta past the no-offering/lathaming stage of ITE? Even deferrals. Arent' those supposed to have worked their way through the system by the time c/o 2012 graduates?

Maybe. Or maybe all of it says something about the stability of a firm going forward. Of course, who knows, Latham might have the last laugh. Maybe a bit of ruthlessness made them leaner, tighter, and more efficient for the future. But of course if they can't recruit good people, it doesn't really matter.

I don't know enough about law firm economics, that much is clear.

Apparently there is about as much work for new grad R.N.s as there is for lawyers right now. :|

Describe a scenario in which you'd advise going to HLS
Public office aspirations. That'd be it. And even that is not worth the $140k-ish.

With today being the last day to make a decision... I was wondering if anyone else had any more input...

I'm prly leaning slightly towards UChi... but nervous about passing up the holy grail that is Harvard for a measly $135k

Thanks!!

Go look up the loan payments on 135K over 10 years. Uchi it is.

I'd take Chicago in a heartbeat if they offered me that scholarship, but they were cheap with me

fwiw, i'd turn down a full ride at chicago for sticker at h.
It's well known you lack rigor.

I don't think this is right. I'm not really sure it's that much easier to clerk at SCOTUS from Harvard than from Chicago (Chicago is small, less competitive student body intellectually, 7th Circuit connections, top professors). As for political ambitions, the mobility and flexibility you have with no debt is probably a much better route to the types of first jobs that can get you politically involved than BIGLAW is.

such a cheap shot, mallard ;)

i mean, i know us midwestern country rubes can't compete with the high-falutin east coast and its cadre of brilliant, but highly mentally disturbed, geniuses

so i'll just say that i know y'all have more than your share of dumbs out there (i know because us midwesterners sent them there)

haha. I was hoping you'd catch that. ;)

Seriously, though, I do think Chicago's clerkship placement is one of the exceptions to my general rule that attending the higher school is always better because differences in student-body talent don't quite match differences in prestige and placement.

APNS, I don't really know much about the HLS alumni network and seeking elected office. Can you give me an example of how this would play out? I have friends at school who are considering running for office, and I used to consider it myself (lulz), but it's not as though I get to vote in my friend's election for District Attorney somewhere in Kansas just because I went to Harvard Law.

Yeah, this might be true, but I don't really think Obama's HLR buddies were major bundlers or contributors compared to Oprah and Warren Buffett etc. Maybe in his early campaigns for the state senate, the House, and the Senate.

Also, frankly, I fucking hate the idea of doing this, which is why I'm not sure I can ever run for anything.

Yea - I could never make it in politics..

APNS - I think that the lay prestige of Harvard is one of the major things keeping it in the race (whether or not it should is probably an irrelevant question). I definitely decided it was worth 60k... but is it worth 135k+interest... that my friend is the question

Sorry for the delay... I wanted to wait until it was official (although I thought when I said I was going to Harvard it was official...

but - UChicago was the choice - I just couldn't turn down that kind of money for what I want to do (hopefully I'll agree with this analysis in three years)

thanks again to everyone who contributed their opinion, they were (mostly) very helpful
