Placing two deposits

I have been hearing that one is not allowed to place two deposits at different schools. I am having a tough time choosing and need more time to decide. So, is this true? why? will the schools find out about it? I have heard something along the lines of- while i am going to be "barred", they look over my history and placing two deposits at other schools displays a lack of integrity. If so, i am still on deferment from a graduate school other than law school. As you can see i am quite indecisive! But will this bite me in the behind or is it okay for another month?

Some deposits state that you must withdraw from all other schools when you place your deposit. Read over the deposit guidelines to see if this is true at the school you are placing deposits. When in doubt, contact the admissions office. I would seriously advise against it if it is not allowed. If it is allowed then I say do what you want to.

No. It is not OK. It completely defies the purpose of a deposit, which is to allow a school to gauge the size, characteristics, scholarship obligations, et al. of its incoming class. They publish a list of depositors, and your acceptances will be revoked.

On a side, but related, note, learn to use this search function.

I placed two deposits and just finished my 1L year at one of the schools. Haven't been expelled yet, at least.

Waldo makes a good point. It's only a problem if there's a policy against it, you do it, and the school finds out. Lawyers are a naturally risk-averse bunch, but how dangerously you want to live is up to you. Edit: That it's a douchey thing to do isn't at issue. It is.

Well, I dunno about all schools, but at least some of them ask for more than one deposit. I doubt that it's much of a big deal if you put two initial deposits down. They keep it cheap initially for a reason. The second deposit is when they start asking for more money in an attempt to weed out people who aren't interested. I mean, it's not something to do just for fun, but sometimes we need extra time to go and visit a school and make a final decision. The people who have put deposits down at one school and then leave at the last minute to attend another don't even seem to have trouble at the bar, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Deposit at both. Then attend both for a year and see which one is better. If you still can't decide, maybe consider going for two JDs. Then you can work at as many law firms as you want!

Come on dude. Just make a decision.

You're going to have to look at the policy. The majority of them have caveats stating you need to withdraw from schools you have already got a response from. However, you're allowed to stay on the WL for other schools. Schools that have 2 deposits tend to be more lenient when it comes to the 1st deposit. Schools that only have one lenient tend to be a little stricter on this policy. BTW, the compiled list of depositers comes out 6/15 I think.

No, it's already out. I deposited at 2 and yesterday I got an email from one of them (the one I'm 99% sure I'm going to) saying they noticed I have concurrent deposits and to please let the school I'm not attending know as soon as possible. I'm not sure what this means and I actually don't know their policies so I'm going to let them know this week. It definitely made me nervous, but I didn't know some actually had policies against it. Both of these schools have 2 deposits so hopefully it's not a huge problem..

hmmm, my pre-law advisor told me that the list of depositers doesn't come out until june as well. the school may have found out just by nature of the fact that admission offices talk to one another. you can always ask them how they found out when you speak to them to find out about their double deposit policy.

Yeah, I thought about that when trialjunky said june 15, but my email says "dear admitted applicant", so it wasn't specifically to me, they sent it to a bunch of people. I guess you could still be right, but it's weird then. I'll see what they say this week I guess.

Not credited. It would be douchey if you were giving your word to attend, but since you have to pay money, it's just a business deal.

Here is what the LSAC website says:

"Except under binding early decision plans, every accepted applicant should be free to accept a new offer from a law school even though a deposit has been paid to another school. To provide applicants with an uncoerced choice among various law schools, no excessive nonrefundable deposit should be required solely to maintain a place in the class. Beginning on June 15 of each year, law schools that participate in the Commitment Overlap Service will be provided with information concerning all enrollment commitments to any law school made by those applicants who have indicated an intention to enroll in that school’s entering class. A law school should clearly communicate its policies on multiple enrollment commitments upon admission."

Agreed. How is it douchey to multiple deposit when sometimes students have deposit deadline before even hearing from all of their schools? I hadn't heard from 3 schools before one of my first deposits was due. Completely business relationship and standard to double/triple deposit.

Furthermore, sometimes schools give out scholarship information after their initial deposit deadline. For example, one of the schools I was admitted to gave me a scholarship just last week, a full month and a half after my first deposits...

Nothing douchey or unethical about it. Just don't do it to places you've contractually committed to.

Now the other one just emailed me:

"We are pleased that you are planning to join us in August. However, we have noticed on a report from the Law School Admissions Council that you have submitted a seat deposit with another law school."

So I guess it went out earlier than people thought.. anyone else receiving these emails?

It is totally ok to put down multiple deposits. It is just your loss if the deposits are nonrefundable.

This. If you haven't made an absolute commitment, there is nothing wrong with multiple deposits. I don't know where people with opinions to the contrary are getting their info.
