NYLS vs Pace

Postby wannabejd3 » Fri May 14, 2010 2:40 pm

Hey everyone, I was hoping you could help me with a tough decision. I know some people are going to spout off to this with a retort of "t15 or nothing at all," but those are not viable options so please just leave helpful comments. Anyway, I am finding myself in a position of choosing between NYLS and Pace. I got into NYLS with a 20,000 per/yr. scholarship, and Pace with 18,000per/yr. (Pace's restrictions on the scholarship are less stringent than NYLS, but I am confident I will retain those scholarships regardless) I also got into SJU with no money (so far, I sent a negotiation letter last week) and I am still waiting to hear back from Cardozo and Fordham. Obviously if I get into Fordham I will be attending, but if I have no such luck I really am torn between NYLS and Pace. Both obviously have some very strong pros and cons. If I go to pace I can live at home and save a lot of money. If I go to NYLS there is an added expense (living), but I will have a greater chance to work in NYC after graduation. I don't think SJU is higher enough in the rankings that it would warrant my attendance with no scholarship $$ versus going to Pace or NYLS with scholarships. Deadlines are coming up, and I need to pick NYLS or Pace, at least for the time being. Thank you for all of your help and consideration.

PS> anyone still waiting to hear from cardozo and/or fordham? I'm going a little crazy with the waiting...

Pace is regarded better in NYC. NYLS is famously known for being one of the worst NYC law schools. Yes, I agree, while SJU is going up in the rankings, it is still not worth sticker (at least in my opinion). But without doubt, Cardozo and Fordham (more so) are a different ball game, especially if you are looking for big law in NYC.

If you want to end up working in NYC, SJU is a much stronger bet than Pace & NYLS, even with the scholarships the latter are offering. And I agree with Pace being higher regarded than NYLS.

But if retaking & reapplying next cycle is NOT an option, and if you end up not getting accepted to Forham or Cardozo, I'd take SJU over the other two.

Fordham is in another league when it comes to NYC, though, so good luck!

Thanks for the input everyone.

I just found out I got waitlisted at Cardozo... does anyone know how frequently they accept people from off the waitlist? I heard it happens quite frequently (compared to other law schools), but this is all anecdotal so I would love to hear from someone who has first-hand experience with them or knows someone who does...

I feel like going to Cardozo (or obviously Fordham) without any scholarship is probably better (in terms of getting a better job out of law school/ in terms of return on your investment in law school) than either NYLS or Pace, even with scholarships. Anyone disagree? Or any last minute opinions on Pace or NYLS (assuming Fordham won't sweep down and rescue me with an admission) before I have to put a deposit in somewhere?

Thanks for humoring me.

I know that Pace is really highly regarded in environmental law, and that's just about it. I don't understand why, if Pace is generally held in higher regard than NYLS, has some quality specialist programs, and has superior metrics, NYLS is ranked in the USNWR as a 3rd-tier school and Pace as a 4th tier, but maybe I'm missing something. The employment picture, in either case, is still pretty grim:

Fordham at sticker is obviously worth it, and probably Cardozo as well; but I don't know what I would do if I were in your situation. If money were no object, I might ultimately choose to live in Tribeca rather than White Plains, attending a much older school that at least used to be great, once, long ago. But if money is an object, either Pace or SJU may be the better bet.

Hey OP, have you been sending Fordham LOCIs? I was waitlisted by them last cycle, sent a few LOCIs, and got accepted. If you are dead set on this school, it might be worth letting them know that you guarantee you will accept the offer and send in the deposit/enroll immediately if accepted. Just make sure they're the only school you're telling this to. :D

And good luck! I would steer clear of NYLS. PM me if you want details.
