S v. CLS ($) v. Chicago ($$) - Ultimate Showdown

Postby mochafury » Thu Apr 22, 2010 10:43 am

Putting this out there in the TLS-verse and seeing what comes back. Sticker at S, $30K from CLS, double that from Chicago. Interested in clerkships, top gov't posts (DOJ, State, OLC) and academia with an interest in biglaw placement for debt management. Visited and loved all schools (in inverse proportion to how much $ I got from them). Have at it.

Oh, and as always, actual law school attendees' opinions are appreciated.

I'm just a 0L but Stanford is about as close to you can get as sure thing in big law. It has great clerkship placement, govt, etc etc.

Chicago can probably get you want you want, but there is a risk of failure (you are in the bottom third of the class).

60K is just not enough. Go to Stanford.

Stanford.
I would eliminate Columbia from the choices, not because its not amazing, but I dont think $30K, minus the extra cost of living in ny, will make much of a difference long term.
Based on your preferences, Stanford seems to be the best choice, but if you are debt averse, then Chicago can certainly allow you to attain your goals

I truly think Id take Stanford at full cost over either of these, regardless of scholarship.

It's just that good.

all 3 schools are amazing but i think the difference is that with H/P system at SLS it's easier to land A job. Maybe if you get straight P's in all 3 quarters you might not get the job you want but at least you have some leeway in arguing that you were at the cusp in many of your classes.

What I mean from this is that at the top end of the spectrum you should get the same prospects from all 3 schools. At the middle it strays towards SLS (what is median at SLS anyway?) and at the bottom, definitely SLS b/c at the other two schools you may be SOL for getting a job through OCI.

If only to hedge your bet against being the bottom, as the SLS student pointed out, it's worth the money.

In good economies, it wouldnt have mattered. now, it's absolutely crucial.

60K barely even puts a dent in the Chicago cost, and you are after some pretty high prestige goals.

Stanford all the way.

I have a sneaking suspicion you are only asking this question because you didn't get into Harvard. Well, sometime during February of next year have a drop by Weather.com and check the weather in Boston.

Stanford = win

ITE Stanford's class size might make it safer than Harvard.

Because your primary interest is in securing a clerkship (federal), then Stanford is the best bet followed by Chicago. If big law opportunities were your primary concern, then another poster is correct in writing that Stanford & Columbia are peers although offering very different surroundings.

Well thanks for that. Any other takers?

By the way, I contest DerrickRose's claim that "60K barely puts a dent" into cost of attendance @ Chi. That's almost 50% tuition, homes.

68K Cost of Attendance * 3 = 203K - 60K = 140K. Still a lot of debt.

Congratulations!
Unless you have a strong reason/preference for Chicago or NY, go to Stanford.

Go to Stanford since A) it definitely won't hurt your career prospects and B) you enjoyed it the most of the 3.

Off topic but I am curious as to the Angry Avacado Friend or Foe monicker as this is a genuine debate within the pet community regarding the element persin contained in avacados which is toxic to dogs. Although the ASPCA's position is that avacados are toxic to dogs a pet food manufacturer created & markets Avoderm, an avacado based dog food that can cause seizures & death in dogs.
P.S. Go to Stanford.
