Penn or Michigan

Post by nooknak355 » Wed Apr 21, 2010 9:53 pm

I've narrowed my choices down to Penn and Michigan. I'm interested in doing public interest work after graduation, especially surrounding health and poverty law. I eventually want to do legal/public policy work for the government, and want to alternate my time between Detroit and the East Coast (NYC, DC, Philly). Both schools are at sticker, but I have residency in Michigan (which doesn't really make a huge difference, but whatever). Does anyone have thoughts on which is a better fit?

Discussed here: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 1&t=114595

Here's what I wrote on that thread:

Michigan for public interest/human rights.

Look at the numbers from Equal Justice Works (http://www.ejwguide.org/):

Total enrollment: Mich 1151, Penn 781
Employed in Business and Industry: Mich 74%, Penn 85%
Employed in Government: Mich 3%, Penn 2%
Employed in Public Interest (non profit): Mich 6% Penn 2%
Employed in Judicial Clerkships: Mich 14%, Penn 9%
% of Grads in Public Service Jobs: Mich 21%, Penn 13%

And because of UM's larger size, those aren't just higher percentages, but higher overall numbers, too.

Disclosure: I'm going to Michigan in the fall (for PI).
