Did you apply late? What was wrong with your application? You might be prime for a re-app.
Applied in mid December. Not early, but not terribly late. No criminal problems. Only guess is a subpar PS. Wrote Why essays for Penn, UVA, Mich...

Illinois isn't a bad option, but there should be a NW ($$) in there with those kind of numbers. I'd wait a year, that will make Northwestern like you even more.

I think it depends on what you can do with your year off. If you have something interesting to do and will be able to save some money, then maybe re-apply.

If you have a job lined up, I'd wait the year. If not, consider the scholarship at Illinois - which at least gives you a line into Chicago.

My two cents.
I would not feel confident at all about going to UIUC if the goal is Chicago biglaw, regardless of the scholarship money.

WVU - full Scholly
Retake my 161 (Practicing 9 points higher)

Notes: Promised a nice practice in WV, however, not sure if I want to directly go back to WV. Took the LSAT while taking the hardest UG schedule of my career and really think I can do much better. Age 22 about to graduate with my dual degree from UG, no debt incurred.

Wow...this thread definitely moves faster than creating your own. Thanks all. :)

Helm... I wouldn't be doing anything groundbreaking, but I would be able to save some money. Otherwise, would you take Duke at sticker over UIUC w/$$$ for the Midwest?

Yes, Duke over UIUC if you want Big Law.

Not that many Chicago firms OCI at Duke. But UIUC OCI was a joke last year. Will it get better? Who knows.

I'd still take Duke though, because your chance at getting big law is about 4 times greater at Duke than Illinois. You may not get Chicago, but you'd get something.

If you really want Chicago, take a year off and apply to Northwestern and to UChi. People with your numbers occasionally get 20K/year scholarships to Northwestern. Also next year write a Why Michigan? essay and brown nose teh shit out of them.

Did you apply to NU this year?

By midwest biglaw, are we talking Chicago or are we including some of the smaller markets like Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Detroit, St. Louis, etc.?

Yes, Duke over UIUC if you want Big Law.
In Chicago?
Most Chicago firms don't go to Duke. But I bet the big firms would rather have a duke grad than a UIUC grad. The question is do they even interview the duke grads. And the answer is probably not.

If this guy wants the midwest, he need to go to Uchi, Mich, or NU.

What I have heard. I remember a story in the New York Times about a lot of Chicago biglaw firms focusing pretty much all their attention on UofC, NU, and Michigan, while leaving the local schools like UIUC in the dust.

I say go to Illinois for big scholarship money. Since your GPA is set, and you don't have a lot of room to move up on LSAT, I don't think its worth the risk to postpone on the chance that you will get into Chicago or NU, (which are the only two better suited for your goals). This is unless you have a good job you could do for another year to rake in more $$$.

In terms of Duke vs. Illinois, I don't think the extra prestige you would get from Duke would help you enough in the Chicago Legal Market to make up for the difference in cash. Duke WOULD be better for Chicago Big Law, but the cost differential just isn't worth it IMO. That is unless you are comfortable practicing big law in the south. Then Duke *100000.

Yea, midwestern T1s did not hold up well. UIUC, ND, and WUSTL OCI were shitshows.

I'm curious if Fordham, UC Davis and Hastings, and GWU had the same problem.

Did not apply to NU b/c I'm coming straight out of undergrad. Definitely would have been a top choice. Wrote the Why Michigan..actually spent the most time of any Why X? essay on that one. I also applied to Michigan at the end of November, earlier than the rest of my apps.

Chicago is far and away the preference, but I'd be open to Milwaukee or Indy as well.

Stanford. Why is this a question? What do you want to do? How likely do you think it is that you would desperately want to stay in TX?

If you're a little more open to geography, I would say go Duke. Otherwise, gain a year of work experience, and reapply. You should be able to get one of Michigan/Northwestern, although not a sure thing.

Yeah, I've heard those may be convincing for people who potentially were YP'ed (not sure if I was). I was hoping for low T14 w/some money (or CC at sticker), and I doubt I'd have any chance at money if I got off Michigan's WL like that.
