I visited as well. Didn't think it was terrible... Thought Pepperdine was the worst!

It's nothing like a big city, that's for sure. Champaign-Urbana has about 150,000 people between the two, and there's a small downtown with some restaurants and shops, as well as a mall with a bunch of chain restaurants nearby. I would strongly advise a visit if you "might go crazy" living for 3 years in such an environment.

I visited, and I would certainly go crazy living there for three years.

Make sure you visit both locations first. I can't visit Urbana-Champaign but I know St. Louis and Big City and what not; I would not like to live there for three years.

I'd love to visit UIUC and Chambana, but I don't have the money to go anymore. That's why I was looking for some input. What are job prospects out there if I brought along my girlfriend? She has a college edu.

Half the people voting are for WUSTL over UIUC. Why? Seems like most everyone is leaning towards UIUC.

[Apologies: the previous statement has been removed for reasons of inaccuracy: please disregard. According to what I've read from UIUC's class profile on the server, UIUC bases its clinic work on a bid system whereby roughly 40% of the school's senior class participates]

What area do you intend to work in? UND, WUSTL, and UIUC are all midwest regional schools, are there any options in the area that you want to work? That is a lot of money to be paying for a degree that isn't portable nationally (without a lot of legwork).

ceceloves wrote:Been thinking it over and I think I'm actually going to go to WUSTL. I know that I probably won't want to end up in Chicago. That being said, WUSTL seems like the better option for job prospects nationally. Plus, WUSTL has guarantess clinic work for all of its students and UIUC only reserves enough for the top 40%.

When you factor in costs of living, we're talking about 39k less for UIUC total. That's around 20% cheaper than WUSTL when you estimate costs of living. All in all, I will be paying more but I really liked the campus and apartments at WUSTL.

BTW, where is the general cutoff for nationally recognized schools? 18, 17, or t14?

Hehe yikes... none of the above, technically

Let's just say you want to go to the west coast. Despite students coming from all over the country... only 8% went back to the pacific region.

Here are the numbers:

New England 3%
Mid-Atlantic 14%
East North Central 16%
West North Central 25%
South Atlantic 17%
East South Central 3%
West South Central 6%
Mountain 5%
Pacific 8%
Foreign 4%

Assume that ENC, WNC, ESC, and WSC are considered WUSTL's region. Then look at the numbers outside of those four regions.

Did you apply to/get into UW? I imagine UW will place better in Seattle than both WuStl and UIUC.

Lol. Alright, so the national school question was kind of dumb.

I'm not sure if geographical placement stats are a good indicator of the possibility to make it back west. Many Illinois students choose to go to Chicago because they enjoy the city, not because they have to. With that being said, I had no problem making it back to California my 1L summer. I am now headed to New York this summer. You will be surprised how far you can get by simply calling an alumnus in the city where you want to work.

Since you didn't visit UIUC, you probably shouldn't base your decision on apartments and the campus. Besides, for three years, you could probably put up with anything. I say take the money: UIUC.

Urbana-Champaign might not be a big city, but you'll be too busy with your studies for you to notice the difference.

OP: What is your gf's degree in? If she is looking for work, she'll be hard pressed to find it in Champaign. Not a lot of businesses or anything like that in the area; the university pretty much runs the show there. I suppose she could try to work in Bloomington or maybe even Decatur, but both are about a 45 drive from Champaign.

(If you'd prefer to PM me since its kinda personal info, go ahead. I'm very familiar with Champaign and this part of the state.)
