Heart/Location v. Money

Postby eleemosynary » Mon Apr 12, 2010 5:30 pm

I'm deciding between two equally ranked schools that have ties to the market I would most likely want to practice, though I am open to going anywhere. Both have offered me money though one would put me in $143K in debt whereas the other would put me in $96K in debt - a difference of $47K (cost of living, books, etc. included).

Thing is, I've grown to really like the more expensive option, with its students, facilities, and proximity to family. There is also one professor who is an expert in a field of law I am interested in.

I've heard attorneys argue that the cheaper school would give me better job opportunities in my market of interest AND less debt - which is the goal of law school - but I am not happy with the facilities and the potential classmates I have met.

So what should I do? Go to a place that will incur more debt where I will be happy (Heart/Location)? Or suck it up and put myself through the other place for the sake of limited debt (Money)?

Let me get this straight: you'll be happy in spite of the additional debt? That is to say, it will in no way interfere with your happiness?

How much more money will you make after graduating with the great marks made possible by being happy throughout your time at law school?

Let me guess, ND is the 150? and UIUC is the 100?

Take the cheaper route. None of these schools are anywhere near a sure thing. You will probably end up with a job paying 50K a year, and 150K in debt on 50K a year salary is really really really hard.

It's a no-brainer. Follow your heart. Always.

This isn't a Disney movie. Tell your heart to shut the fuck up and take the money.

Happiness + Preferred Location > Money anyday of the week imo.

Happiness during law school is overrated.
