If you were 100% set on PI, I might say Chicago, because IBR and LRAP will make that debt not matter, but you seems a bit ambivalent about it.

Is it really that simple? Would I be foolish to take Penn at $78k scholly and still pursue IBR and LRAP when I could've done the same at Chicago?

IBR makes debt manageable but this "LOLZ don't worry about debt because you have IBR" ignores the fact that your bank account still reads -$200,000. There's something very uncomfortable with owning that much debt for a decade.

Not to mention the fact that the programs may have graduated ceilings that start to cut into your income. Obviously, you're not always going to be making the same amount of money. Overall, anything you would want to do at Chicago you could most likely do at Penn +78K.

Anybody else have an opinion on my post?
To clarify, I most certainly want to do some form of PI, ideally in NYC, but I want to keep all doors open (clerkship, 1-2 years at a firm, etc.).

Penn is the all around best bet. The poll speaks for itself haha.

It's actually nice for the first 2 quarters of 1L, I hear. The third quarter is when it gets ridiculous.

It allows one to take more courses. I suppose this is a negative factor, as well.

Thanks for the helpful advice guys. Penn definitely wins in the Penn v. Chicago battle. However, things might change if I get into HLS or SLS (or CLS, with my goals). If that's the case, I'm sure another thread will crop up lol. You guys rock.

But if the OP is going to do PI post-grad, what's the big deal? He'll have his loans forgiven. shouldnt he/she take advantage of IBR and go to the best school possible if he's so intent on PI (he/she says so)? won't the $78k not matter ?

This is pathetic but I am developing regrets about not taking Chicago despite the scholarship. This is nothing new, but I spoke to a Harvard student yesterday who talked about the gap between Chicago and Penn as being enourmous - "The only schools I really notice are Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, and sometimes NYU."
I would really appreciate if anyone can help talk me out of this. It's really starting to get to me. I thought I wanted to do PI but at this point I'm open to anything - all I can say for certain is that I'm most interested in working in NYC. Ugh.

The student is overstating the difference between UChi and Penn. Who cares what he notices, it matters what employers notice. Penn does very well in NYC.

For PI/gov there is never any reason not to take sticker. PI IBR isn't going anywhere.

Who is this person? Why does it matter what he or she notices? Where is he or she looking? Do her "noticings" really trump the other considerations being weighed in the decision? I find it hard to believe they do. Desert Fox has TCR: Go to Penn. :D
