Post by cardinalsatl » Fri Apr 02, 2010 9:42 pm

Tied at 10, but seem to be treated pretty differently on the blogs. Thoughts?

UVA is (a) cheaper, and (b) not Duke. The choice is obvious.

Assuming UVA is offering at least 30k, take their offer. If not, just pick the one you like more. There is not a lot of daylight between the two in terms of placement.

Not quite true.

As an extreme example, UVA has placed 1-4 (1 or 2 being most common) Supreme Court clerks basically every year for the past long time. Duke placed 2 this year, but hadn't had any in 10+ years since then.

I know 'odds of clerking on the Supreme Court' isn't the ideal metric by which to measure the placement ability of two schools, but UVA really does have a noticeable bump in certain fields. The similarity in gross numbers belies the fact that UVA grads tend to have access to better / more-prestigious-er options even if very roughly the same portion of the classes from each school goes on to prestigious-y employment.

The difference isn't huge, but it's real and worthy of consideration.

I'll concede SCOTUS, but where's the data for UVA? I've got the list of last summer's 2L placement for Duke and they had 44 students at V20 firms.
