Emory vs WashU

Post by mavsman88 » Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:04 pm

I don't have a geographic preference, but I am looking for the best name with the best portability. Also, a nice facility and quality professors is really important. I know that's very vague but that's all I have decided on.

Any insight? Is WashU worth full sticker over Emory half price?

If you dont have much preference either way go with Emory half price. I wouldn't take WashU at sticker with such a good scholarship at a peer school. They are both strong regional schools located in decent markets, I think they will both give you about the same portability. But the facilities at WashU are nicer than Emory but that shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I think I am going to have a similar dilemma in my own situation, so I'll chime in with my thoughts. WashU is extremely valuable if you want to practice in the midwest, especially for the STL and Chicago markets. I think Emory is a tiny bit more portable, but I don't think it's significant, and obviously it's a better bet for the southern part of the US. Both campuses are beautiful, and it is my understanding that the professors and facilities are comparable and excellent. It really comes down to what your preference is. I think you should visit each and try to get a feel for them as best you can.

Emory.

If you feel the same about either one, then take the one that'll be $60k cheaper. That combined with the fact that I'd hate to live in St. Louis for 3 years.

I voted Wash U, but didn't see that you have a half-scholarship at Emory. I would either choose Emory, or leverage that money into a scholarship at Wash U- they're usually really good with money.

I don't think you're going to get all that much portability out of Emory, but if you have no preference then take the money. Otherwise, try to leverage that money at wustl and go there if they match it.

Both schools are pretty similar with a slight advantage to WUSTL in terms of name recognition and facilities. Faculty is probably the same. Is that difference worth 60k? Probably not.

I got ~$85,000 from Wash U and about $60,000 from Emory. They're both regional schools but I'd rather live in warmer weather so I'm leaning pretty heavily in the direction of Emory. As far as your position, if you don't have a preference as to where you'll end up and you'll get a scholly from Emory I'd probably go Emory to save money.
