V $$$$ vs NYU $ and Chicago $

Postby ridleyroses » Tue Mar 09, 2010 3:04 pm

Right now I am in the position of deciding between UVA, NYU, and Chicago.

I have similar offers from NYU and Chicago, and both would be about 100,000 dollars more expensive in total cost than UVA. In terms of post-school debt, UVA would probably have me at no debt, while NYU and Chicago would be something like 70-80 grand in debt each. My goal is to do Big Law.

Graduating debt free from a T-10 school sounds like the most idea situation you could possibly be in. Though 70 or 80K from a top school doesn't sound like too terrible a burden. You have some amazing choices. The high costs of cities would lead me to pick UVA, especially since it would be free for you.

The only schools you should consider over a full ride at a school on UVA's level are HYS. To consider Chicago or NYU over UVA with UVA being free and NYU and Chicago being over 100K, barring any very serious personal circumstances that would require you to be in either Chicago or NYC, is simply unwise.

I agree with everyone else so far. The fact that you got such a huge scholarship from UVA in proportion to the T6 indicates that NYU and Chicago are practically ripping you off. Have you tried to negotiate scholarships yet? The differences between UVA and NYU/Chicago just are not great enough to justify paying an additional $100,000.
