Emory or WUSTL
I hope to work on the East Coast, probably in the DC or area and I'm interested in civil liberties, constitutional law, and public interest in general. I have $ from WUSTL, and $$ from Emory. I've heard people say that both schools are overrated so I'm just trying to get a sense of which school might be better fit for me.

Decide based on money and personal preference. Visit both, and go to Emory if WUSTL doesn't grab you. I've visited both and liked WUSTL much, much better than Emory. I might choose Emory in your position, though.fancifulthings wrote:I hope to work on the East Coast, probably in the DC or area and I'm interested in civil liberties, constitutional law, and public interest in general. "Overrated" is relative. People with a stake in a school ranked lower than another will probably tend to state that the higher ranked school's rating is inflated. Maybe GW or UIUC is better than/on par with those two schools, maybe they aren't. The exact rankings between the schools after UCLA, Vandy, and UT and before mid-30s matter less than the general area (top, middle, or bottom of that range of numbers) in which they reside.

WUSTL has a pretty well regarded and long established Congressional and Administrative Law clinic in DC. Plus they also just established a cooperation with the Brookings Institution, but I am not sure on the details here. Maybe a current WUSTL student could chime in on this one.
I don't know where all this overrated talk is coming from. WUSTL is a T20 school - not more not less. I think they have decent biglaw placement (recently around 30%, in a good economy maybe around 40% ??) and from what I understand they are really trying to establish a stronger WUSTL presence in DC (hence the cooperation with Brookings). Now add to that the fact that many people attend WUSTL with substantial sholarship money, I really think that WUSTL should be an attractive option for many people looking at the T15-T25 range.

Most of it stems from the fact that their T20 status was gained fairly recently. There's no reason to expect them to drop, however. Their stats aren't decreasing and their reputation scores have been increasing.Xiaolong wrote:WUSTL has a pretty well regarded and long established Congressional and Administrative Law clinic in DC. Visit and see which one you like more. If you can't decide, follow the money if it's significantly cheaper at Emory.

Both offer very similar career prospects so I would transfer to whatever law school you think you will enjoy most or what region of the country you anticipate wanting to practice in (WUSTL stronger in the midwest, Emory in the Southeast).
I agree with Ken, Wustl in the future will be better for anything outside the southeast, but right now their employment prospects are probably very similar for biglaw outside their regions, maybe wustl has an edge in NYC and DC, but maybe not. For east coast I would go Wustl, but I'm biased cause I will probably be going there. But ATL is a great city imao.
