Top schools hired by NLJ 250 firms in 2009!!!

Post by kehdrms » Sun Feb 21, 2010 6:31 am

NW is #1, with 55.5% of its graduates hired at NLJ 250 firms
Last year, it was Columbia at 70.5%.. This year, the percentage for Columbia falls to 54.7%...
Something to help everyone choose schools this cycle

Here are some (personal) highlights
NW switches places with Columbia
Vandy at #11
USC > UCLA
BC > BU

That partner promotion one is pretty crazy. For such a small school, Stanford dominated. Interpretation 1: Stanford has a lot of talented but money crazed workaholics. Interpretation 2: Stanford grads go to small IP boutiques with great quality of life and awesome partnership chances.

Michigan and UVA weathered it really well, only dropping a small bit, and beating out NYU (who now has less than 50% NLJ250 placement). Honestly, never thought I'd see that. Vanderbilt topping schools like GULC, Cornell, and Penn was pretty startling too.

The Stanford thing is even more startling when you notice that the schools behind it 1. don't even come close and 2. are the mammoth schools that graduate 550 as opposed to Stanford's 175.

NYU: ouch; didn't make it to median?

Is this generally expected to be the low point? Is this the final result of the bleeding, or could next year be even worse?

Umm... I think that these rankings really make us focus on ridiculously tiny differences. The differences between Chicago, Virginia, Michigan, NYU, and Duke seem pretty negligible according to this graph.

I'm surprised nobody has brought up how much work experience mattered this year. It let NW dominate.

People who are doing clerkships with NLJ 250 offers post-clerkship are not accounted for by this right?

+1

Vandy's percentages actually went up. Only one of the top 20 to do have more grads hired.

Vandy's on the move in a big way. Small class size with a great CSO, they're movin' on up. T14 over Cornell soon.

A good number of hiring partners who lurk this website have gotten confused with all the Penn = Penn State jokes and now conflate the two schools?

My question: why are all of the schools at virtually the same %?

Core rightly points out that it used to be more stratified with cls and chicago leading the heard with roughly 70% at nlj. Are these %s more consistent with a gpa-based hiring system that makes it less relevant where you are at school w/in the t17 or so?

I am very surprised that Penn was beat by Michigan and UVA pretty badly. Any theories on why this could be? Penn seems to be a monster in previous years.
