University of Texas Sticker vs. Florida State Full Ride

I am very confused. I wanted to stay in the South and preferably work in the Atlanta market, but I was also considering Texas as well. I was very excited when I was granted admission to University of Texas but was jolted back to reality when I realized I had to pay sticker. I got a full ride to FSU but I'm not sure if I want to stay in Florida and I don't know how well an FSU degree travels out of state. I haven't submitted a matching request to UT yet but I doubt the scholarship offer from FSU would do anything to entice UT into giving me money. PLEASE HELP!!!!

I am not very familiar with UT's scholarship department specifically, but you would be surprised what a request for more funds (with an offer of full ride to another school) will do. I bet they give you at least a 5k a year scholarship.

As to which you should choose, this is obvious even if you get no more money. Go to UT. FSU is not going to help you at all in Georgia. They hate each other. UT will probably place better in Georgia, and if you cannot get a job there a job in Texas is almost a shoe in. As a TTU graduate it pains me to say this, but UT is your best bet. Enjoy being an evil, evil longhorn.

Think of it this way:

FSU: little to no debt, but 60k job per year in FL. Few options outside of FL. You would have to be the top of your class to look outside of the state. Don't count on that. Plus, you also have the shadow of UF to take the better FL jobs.

UT: Debt. But, you will prob be able to get a job. Def in Texas. Possibly 160k, prob 120k-140k-ish. At this a salary like this then you can prob pay off the debt in < 5 years. Then you will have a job, career, etc. I vote UT.

This assumes, of course, that you want to follow the $$$.

Tough decision, but if your scholarship to FSU has GPA requirements, then definitely UT.

I definitely want to follow the money. I'm looking for big law firms.

Then UT is the obvious answer.

I guess my biggest worry is the debt and being able to pay it off in a reasonable amount of time and whether UT is worth it but with this response it looks like it may be.

Texas! You will love it. Plus, the economy in Texas is doing well considering the circumstances and the major cities are growing every year.

I'm also wondering what everyone thinks about the placement of Texas law outside of the state of Texas and what states they have a good placement in

If you keep your current standard of living, forgo all luxury items and spend all your extra money on loans, then 3 years max with a biglaw job. The key here is to live on Riverside or share an apartment in Hyde Park/North Central area.

If you want to do things like buy houses/condos, luxury cars, marry someone with similar debt to service, etc., then it will take you longer.

I don't think banking on BigLaw even in the lower T14 is advisable ITE, but UT is about your best bet outside of the T14 to be sure you can get a decent job and pay off loans. Dallas, Houston, Austin and, to some extent, San Antonio have many market-paying legal jobs and Texas' economy is about as well off as an economy can be right now. Texas, NC, and Oregon are actually the only three states not facing budget deficits this year.
