LSU (10k/yr) vs. Tulane (40K/yr) Forum

so I recently got a scholarship to LSU for 15k for the first year(I'm out of state). It is renewed if I remain in the top 33%. I know that I shouldn't assume being in the top 1/3 after my first year, but I figure that after my first year i can obtain in-state tuition anyway so it will come out about the same. So basically I'm looking at paying between 10k-14k a year in tuition at LSU.
I haven't received anything from Tulane, so they would cost me about 40K in tuition. so the question is, would it be better to take LSU at 10K-14K a year, or Tulane at 40K a year?

Also, I'd stick with LSU if you want to practice in Louisiana after school. Tulane grads mostly leave the state after graduation and LSU prepares you to practice in-state well for Louisiana.

if u wanna practice out of state tulane is way better as it got 3 times the amount of oci's in 08 than lsu, from ny/cali/dc tulane had 24 compared to lsu who only had 3. also idk wat lsu's numbers are but only 33% of tulane grads stay instate. finally if u wanna practice in new orleans tulane might be better since its in new orleans

Tulane is a better school but not 90k with compounding interest better. I would take the money.

yeah I don't really care where I practice, as long as I'm in the south. I'm perfectly fine staying in Louisiana if I get a decent job. So degree portability is not really something that I care much about. I just want to try and secure a governmentt job (preferably an ADA position) wherever that may be.

LSU. Going to a school like Tulane at sticker is an iffy proposition to begin with. LSU at $10K/yr dominates it.

Did you make sure of this? Because I checked into this a bit. I thought that LSU was a state school where you could not establish residency by just being a student there for a year. Or at least it was difficult (have to show you're there for more than just education purposes etc). But if I'm mistaken about this, I'd like to know

Even if he is out of state he is still paying 23,000 a year compared to 40,000. Although I would like to know as well.

Well if I went to LSU for law school, I would plan on staying in Louisiana. You have to do things such as register to vote, obtain a louisiana driver's license, etc. From what I've heard, all of these things can be done in a year, and apparently there are many out of state residents who obtain state residency after their first year.
EDIT- and as Darkknight said, even in the worst case scenario(lose my scholarship after first year, NEVER obtain state residency) then Tuition would still only add up to about 56K after all three years versus 120K at Tulane

Just called admissions for the school. In order to get in state residency for tuition you have to live in the state and work full time for a year. So you, and I, would be paying out of state tuition for the three years going there. Still not bad, but not the greatest either.

According to LSN for one year an out of state resident can expect to pay 36,246, that is tuition and living expenses which brings a three year total of 108,738. This is based on the 2006-2007 cost

That's more in line with I thought they said when I called. I'm not exactly sure. But it didn't sound like it was as easy as getting a driver license, registering to vote, etc. But let's say OP did establish residency and manage to keep the scholarship. Would he be able to get to use both, and essentially be going for free?

Yeah sucks, I'd be very tempted to go to LSU if I could get residency after a year. As it stands I'll sit and wait to see what else blows my way.
