no, seriously he's not

he explicitly said it was wrong to be homosexual and that it should be a crime, in the Symposium and the Laws

no need to continue this further, but I figure it should be pointed out

He's not making it up, he's just misinterpreting it. He's referring to "Platonic" love which is one of the most misunderstood concepts in western culture. It doesn't actually refer to any love that is devoid of sexual desire, nor does it refer to a sexual love between older men and boys like the idiot who posted that said. What Plato was referring to was a love that develops between an older male guide and what is essentially a younger male pupil. IT ISN'T OVERTLY SEXUAL. It was the love between him and his students that developed through the process of him guiding them on their life journey. It has possible sexual undertones, but it is not a strictly sexual relationship. The relationship between Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore is an example of Platonic love, perhaps even inspired by it. There wasn't any sexual aspect to their relationship (even though Dumbledore was gay, apparently) it was just that they grew very fond of each other through the mentorship. I studied abroad in Greece last summer and learned all about this on the steps leading to Asine. It was very cool.

History fail, man. Old men having sex with little boys was not seen as homosexual, certainly you understand the difference between what someone writes and what someone actually does, and finally we're not just talking about one man here.

That really misses the point (and yes we are talking about one man, Plato or two if you want to add in Socrates)

I don't know what Plato did in his spare time, but I do know what he wrote.

Aside from what the poster above (who probably actually has read some of Plato's work), Plato has said in no uncertain terms, that sexuality outside of procreation is bad. At no point did he ever write that old men having sex with boys was ok. People made that argument in Ancient Greece (it WAS common place among the elites) but in the Symposium Plato criticizes that point of view thoroughly. People fail miserably in understanding that, and mistake views that he was criticizing for his own, because they are too fucking dumb to know the difference (or want to score some culture war points or other such bullshit).

EDIT: If you want to say that the pederastic view was popular in Ancient Greece fine, that's probably true, but it was never supported by Plato

Lesson here is: don't go diddling kids and say Plato said it was ok

this thread can go back to the previously level of bromance, I've got no interest in discussing pederasty any more

NO, this is WRONG. It wasn't that the Greeks (or the Hellenes as they call themselves) saw old men having sex with boys as ok, it was that they viewed old men having homoerotic feelings for their male pupils (who weren't little boys, they were university students of the wealthy who could afford to send their sons to be educated by the most brilliant scholars of the time) as acceptable. THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE.

In this thread history is perverted even more than the subject matter.

sophia.olive wrote:Must I clear everything up. Everyone has a certain amount of "maleness" and a certain amount of "femaleness." you add it up you have 100%. Now lets say you are joey (boy or girl doesn't really matter), joey is 75% maleness and 25% femaleness, he/she will generally be attracted to 25% femaleness and 75% femaleness. of course hormones, watching to many action movies, society, being raised be only a father/mother all effect this. This is not only looks, you could have a buff guy with femine mannerisms and women will sense that and if they want 100% maleness they will not be attracted. Likewise some one could wear tight jeans and arch their hand, but bark like a cave man when someone looks at their girl. Some girls may even like 100% femaleness but in a man because they like the penis. The %s may not even effect sexual preference.

now personally i like the 25% maleness 75% femaleness

who knows though

This is a pretty heteronormative argument. It assumes that one is attracted to another by how much their oppositely gendered characteristics compliment one's own. It does nothing to explain this:

That's right, too big bears kissing. (I would have put up a real picture, but google images all turned up too porny...)

How many of these ideas are your own, and how many are regurgitated from some book in a gender studies class you took?

I thought the /judith butler made it pretty obvious. I can provide citations if you want (I would love to pull out some Levi-Strauss, Wittig, and Foucault again, just like in the good ole days). Just PM me and we can discuss gender for hours.

Now, did you get your "men like pretty ladies and pretty ladies like 24" argument from anywhere, or just your mother?

And, FWIT, I never took a gender studies course. I was an English major. They were all gender studies.

From Robin Waterfield's "Athens - From Ancient Ideal to Modern City" He's a prolific Greek Scholar.... translated about 20 ancient greek texts, very respected.

"It was accepted that at a certain time of his youth a teenager had a kind of beauty, and that older men would be attracted to him; ancient Athenian homosexuality was in fact pederasty in the literal sense of the word. If an affair took place, it was monogamous (there was little homosexual promiscuity) and generally lasted only a few years, as long as the boy kept his youthful "bloom," as the Greeks called it. Lifelong homosexual relationships between men were extremely rare, though the pair were supposed to remain friends even after the sexual side of the relationship had died down." Homosexual relationships between women were also temporary, even fleeting. Athenian homoeroticism was largely an upper-class phenomenon, for two main reasons. First, any soceity which represses women as much as ancient Athens did runs the risk of forcing it's members to find other outlets for their sexuality. The second factor concerns the somewhat ritualized expectations of a homoerotic affair. A good-looking boy who was in bloom would be pursued by several older men. These older men were the ones feeling passion, and one of them would be successful if he could induce the boy to admire him. This was manly enough to be acceptable, but boys were not expected to flirt to attract lovers, becase that was regarded as too effeminate, so sex was generally limited to masturbation or intercourse between the thighs. The boy would most likely feel little or nothing beyond a degree of excitement. He was expected merely to "gratify" the lover, as the Athenians tended rather delicatedly to put it. What the boy got out of the affair - and this again is why it was an upper-class phenomenon - was a form of patronage and mentorship. In return for granting his sexual favors, he would expect the older man to act as an extra guardian in public life, to introduce him into the bst social circles, and later, perhaps many years after the sexual side of the affair was over, to help him gain a foothold in the political life of the city; this would seem especially attractive to boys from poorer households who were eager for advancement."
