I can't figure out that graph, but I was being sort of facetious. I mean I left New York, too. And I am a converted West Coaster now. That said, I refuse to entertain the notion that Chicago is a "better" (however one defines that word in this case) city than New York.

Read the link. NY is by far the state with the most extreme outflux of residents.

As for New York versus Chicago:

New York has more of the stuff common people don't care about: art, culture, etc.
Chicago has less of the stuff that common people dislike: intellectuals, artists, foreigners, etc, and more of the stuff they do: sausage, deep dish pizza, etc.

Eh, to me NYC is slightly more entertaining but mainly a bigger, uglier, dirtier, and more expensive version of Chicago.

I'm curious; have you lived in socal, too? I'm wondering if you'd prefer norcal or socal.

That

+

Price of a nice condo in the loop < Price of condo in Manhattan

= Chicago win

Pizza is something NYC and Chicago will never agree on. As a native New Yorker, I would take NY pizza over deep dish any day of the week. Can you even get deep dish by the slice?

While neither city's weather compares to California, I think NYC has overall better weather than Chicago. Not as cold in the depth of winter and equally humid in summer. Spring and fall are the best seasons in both cities so that's sort of a wash.

Nightlife in New York is so much better than any city but LA (excepting destination cities like Miami, Vegas and New Orleans) that it's really not even a topic worth discussing. Bars basically never close and there are bars on every street in every neighborhood but midtown. I'd argue that the NYC public transportation system is the best in the country (though admittedly I haven't spent a ton of time dealing with Chicago's). New York's sports teams are generally better and there are definitely more young people.

Oh yeah, and Virgin America flies to New York but not Chicago. And O'Hare really sucks.

I've never lived in SoCal, no, but I've spent a lot of time there. My sister, grandparents and long-time SO live there, and my younger brother is in college there. I don't like it as much as NorCal, but I don't hate LA the way many NorCal people do. LA has better nightlife than San Francisco for sure, but I think the intrinsically superficial and vapid nature of some of the people in LA — as well as the hierarchical social structure based almost solely on status — would get to me. As a native New Yorker, I would also hate the lack of efficient/meaningful public transportation.

If I were going to live in SoCal, I'd want to live in San Diego. I LOVE San Diego.

+1. I like OC a lot but it's a little too suburban for my tastes. SD is perfect. I haven't been to NorCal in a while but I think I'd prefer SoCal just because it's a little warmer year-round.

All of this is why I need Berk to come through for me.

Because it's too expensive to live in. Layoffs/recession + high COL = go elsewhere. Most of the people I know want to live in NYC, they just don't because it's so damn expensive.

Hell, one of the reasons I want to be a lawyer is so I can have a job that pays enough to let me afford living there.

Awesome, good work man. Did you apply to Yale? Is it HLS for sure now?

Also, you should absolutely tell Columbia. Fuck them.

thanks. ive got no shot at new haven, so it looks like my cycle just ended pretty abruptly this morning. it speaks to my lack of maturity that i'm debating sending cls a really sarcastic thank you note for deferring me.

also, thanks vanwinkle. i'm pretty stoked.
Well at the very least you should mention that you're going to Harvard in your withdrawal letter to CLS. They won't need the sarcastic thank you to realize their mistake.

To be honest, it's possible they deferred his application because they suspected he'd get into Harvard and go there anyway.

And break his Columbia ED contract? I doubt it.

Oh, I didn't realized he'd applied ED. In that case write them a nice "Dear CLS, fuck you" letter and deliver it enclosed in a flaming bag of dog poop.

The more I think about it, I think his letter should read something like:

Dear CLS,

I am writing to withdraw my application to Columbia Law School. I have been admitted to Harvard Law School and will be enrolling there next fall. I want to sincerely thank you for deferring my early decision application. I'll send you a postcard from Cambridge.

Thanks again.

what is the worst way that could backfire? could one have an acceptance rescinded simply for lacking a basic sense of class and manners?

No. I just wouldn't go looking for work at CLS if you decide to go into academia.

Wouldn't it be best to see if he gets accepted off of the waitlist, and to send the letter at that time? Or is that the plan, and I just missed it?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
