So I haven't heard about any money yet from NYU, Chicago or Penn. But given my lowish GPA, not really expecting much. And I just found out my scholly info from BU. $75,000 over three years $25,000 a year  !!!! Sooo now I have a dilemna I didn't expect. I know I could always receive $ from one of Penn, NYU or Chicago, but just want to get some feedback.

So what do you guys think?

BU $$

NYU

Penn

Chicago

Also, I am biglaw all the way.

For biglaw, Chicago all the way.

I voted NYU, although I think NYU and Chicago are pretty even. Really, it'd just come down to preference and market.

The 75k is a nice offer, but I think it'd have to be full-tuition at BU to come close to countering the long-term benefits from going to Chicago or NYU.

NYU or Chicago depending on market preference, and this is a debt-averse person telling you this. BU is great, but if big law is your goal, you'd be a taking a risk at BU in this economy.

Chicago for me, but each answer certainly holds relative appeal.

BU with $$ comes out to about 45,000 for a three year law education (not including COL.)

Chicago is about 44,000 a year, which comes out to 132,000 (not including COL)

That's a huge difference. (87,000 tuition difference)

Think about that.

Although is there a GPA requirement?

No GPA requirement.

I agree with you, and I'm struggling with the same question.

Another way to look at it, though, is that at BU, you might have a 10-15 percent change of getting a well-paying job right away. You have to outperform your classmates. At Chicago/NYU, you'd probably be able to get a similar job finishing near median.

So the debt is higher, but the margin for error is also much greater. And if you do finish, say, top 20 percent at Chicago/NYU, you're looking at a clerkship and a truly elite firm. To me, that's worth the $87,000 difference.

You're not talking T10, you're talking T6 ... I voted NYU, but whichever city/school you like better.

So, what would you choose $$ or a top school?

People at median at Chicago/NYU don't consider dropping out, even if they want biglaw and have a lot of debt.

That may be true. But I think the legal market is changing, and there is a lot of comfort in knowing that your financial situation in the future can be manageable.

Again, it depends on the individual, but debt sucks even with biglaw.

Keep in mind that there is a 60% attrition rate at big law firms. Just because you get into biglaw doesn't mean your future is secure. BIG debt will still remain.

Another thought occured to me. Could you negotiate for a full-ride by leveraging your acceptance into NYU and Chicago?

I too have this dilemma....almost exactly the same except my BU $ is a little less. Not interested in Biglaw though, and less worried about debt..

I haven't heard of anyone leveraging acceptances into more money only money else where. I guess it makes sense.

I think that the choice b/w NYU and Chicago comes down to personal preferences (personally, Chicago's small class size is very appealing to me). If Penn throws some money your way and you an affinity for the campus (as I do), then it merits strong consideration. At this point, I would forever forget about BU ...

Not Chicago/NYU but Columbia which is close enough.

In that case, Chicago. Or Columbia if they take you.

Anyone else feel like OP could leverage his NYU/Chicago acceptances for decent $$$ from Penn?
