University of Maryland

Post by Mullyman » Wed Jan 20, 2010 1:48 pm

I am contemplating applying to University at Maryland for their part time program.

How do people feel about the part-time program?
Is it easy to transfer to the full time after the first year?

Does Univ. of Maryland place decently in DC?

Any insight is greatly appreciated, thank you!

I have a friend attending there now, from what I gather it falls behind the DC schools (GULC, GW, AU & GMU) and of course all T14 schools, for placement into DC. Part of the problem is the law school is not located in the DC suburbs like UMd undergrad is, but in downtown Baltimore. The school seems to primarily place at Maryland firms.

FWIW, the school is also not located in the greatest neighborhood in Balt, my friend has had his car broken into three times so far.

Thanks for the responses. Since, the law school primarily places in MD, or specifically Baltimore, are there a lot of Big law jobs in baltimore? Also, anybody know how easy it is to transfer to their full time program after starting out in the part time? Thank you.

How do you get a fee waiver from them? What is the procedure?

UMD seems to be mostly a MD-only school, but I'm not particularly up on the region. You'd be better served to go to a school like GMU if you are sure you want DC law.

What is attracting you to UMD? Just the ranking?

Working/living in Bethesda would be much more attractive IMO than working and living in DC. Maryland has the highest avg income out of any state, and the opportunities are top-notch. Just my opinion.
