  • University of Iowa Law, in-state tuition with no scholarships
  • Suffolk, full tuition scholarship (3.0 requirement)
  • Quinnipiac, $28,000/yr
  • Hofstra, $20,000/yr
I'm not sure about the requirements for the Quinnipiac and Hofstra scholarships, they went to my permanent address and the information was relayed to me. Anyway, I'm pretty set on Iowa law, but feel like I should at least give the other options some consideration. While I don't really specifically want to work in the Midwest, I'm not opposed to it either. Working in Chicago or Minneapolis/St. Paul would be fine. Ultimately I think I would be fine with working in any of the regions these schools are in, I'm not too picky, though would prefer to stay in the north (I like winter, weird!).

Two specific interests of mine are Public Interest Law and International Law. I'd love to go abroad, to Russia or Sweden would be ideal, during law school if possible.

Thoughts, criticism, flames? Thanks!
Gotta go with Iowa - tuition is cheap in-state, super low COL. This isn't that close imho, and I'm usually a pro-scholarship person.

Alright, you're making me feel good about basically already having decided on Iowa :)

Go to Suffolk so that I have an ever-so-slightly better chance of getting admitted to Iowa.

In honesty, I am surprised that a decision is even coming down to these schools. On the one hand, you have a pretty well-respected but regional Midwest school, and then, on the other hand, highly regional schools on the east coast. What I would expect to see is a decision come down to Iowa compared to, say, a midwestern school like Creighton with a scholarship.

Where you go should be about where you want to live. I think that's basically the only relevant question here. If that's the Midwest more than Boston, I think Iowa is best. If it's Boston, then Suffolk hands down.

Yeah, it is kind of a weird set of schools for it to come down to, mostly because I'm relatively indifferent about where I live. Iowa gives me a number of options, since it is strong in a larger region than the others, or at least that is the feeling I am getting.

Choose Iowa, unless you absolutely want to work in the east coast.

As a general rule, the world has too many lousy lawyers already. We are oversaturated with lawyers. The oversaturation is particularly obvious when you talk to TTT graduates that are hanging a shingle with their buddy from law school as they eat ramen noodles each night for dinner. There are so many fields you can enter for far less educational/monetary investment that pay more than being a cut-rate lawyer. Trust me, the world doesn't need any more people that help you set up a living will, land trust or try to resolve a landlord/tenant debacle. That work sucks.

SOOOOOOOO

If you are going to enter law school your attitude and mindset must be "I'll be damned if I am going to be average". Go large or don't go to lawschool. If I had a choice between Iowa for $100k out of pocket and the other schools you listed for free, I'd still say Iowa. (or perhaps pick a different vocation) Again, back to the premise above, you have to go to a great school if you want to defy the statistics about law employment nationally. It is only going to get worse.

Might I suggest you apply to a few reach schools still this cycle to see if you can get into a higher tier through some divine providence? (Nothing wrong with Iowa mind you, just back to the premise you need the best school in order to defy legal employment odds)
