While I do not attend Pitt law myself, a close relative does, and he and I have spoken extensively about it.

A few things he likes:

A diverse student body
Supportive faculty
Not-ultra-competitive student body

Major dislike:

Career services office. From what he says, the school's career services office does not do nearly enough to help students find summer clerkships.

So basically, he enjoys the school, but he finds the career service office highly unhelpful.

Anyone offer more insight into or opinions on this school?

i had a friend at Upitt and disliked it enough to transfer to a LOWER ranked school. i never talked to him too much about his decision though, so i can't say specifically.

I dunno about Pitt Law, but if anyone's looking to go there, Pittsburgh's cost of living is awesome and there are lots of little neighborhoods with tons of character. Stay away from JJ Land Realtors though. They were my former slumlords.

Hi. I am brand new here to TLS, but I have been reading this forum for over a year, and have learned a lot from the folks on the forum. I am headed to the University of Pittsburgh in the fall. I am leaving behind a wonderful career, and have chosen Pitt over other law schools that are higher ranked (namely 2 in the top 50). I initially applied to Pitt as a semi-safety school, but after I was accepted, I went to visit and I fell in love with both the school and the city. Here are the things I know about Pitt:

1) They have excellent faculty. One of the things that Pitt is known for is the quality of their faculty.

2) They have a wonderful library.

3) The students there seemed happy and well-adjusted.

4) Graduates of Pitt place very well in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania, and not too badly in New York. There are a lot of firms in Pittsburgh, and Pitt grads are the strong majority of grads employed in these firms.

5) The school is awesome. It is very urban, huge, beautiful, and very strongly supported in the city. Pitt students get a lot of benefits- free bus access with a Pitt ID, cheaper food, etc.

The two things I was not as thrilled with about Pitt was the career services (which has already been mentioned), and the actual law building (which was nice, but pretty old).

I am, however, very excited about starting at Pitt in the fall.

It's a great education, but it's also a regional school so you may have to take a job in Pittsburgh. Even though it's in PA, it's not close enough to Philadelphia that employers feel very comfortable hiring from there.

Lilfolksinger...I guess I'll be seeing you in August.

I relocate to Pittsburgh in mid-July. The wife and I got a place in Regent Square...about 15-20 minutes from school by bus.

BTW....what do you mean you get cheaper food????? (Please explain!)

Students at Pitt get a lot of discounts at local restaurants simply by showing their Pitt ID. The Pitt ID also gets you discounts at a lot of events around town...I was surprised when I went to visit and saw how many restaurants advertised 10% or 15% discounts for Pitt students.

Cool, huh?

I am from Pittsburgh and attended Pitt undergrad. One minor negative of the law school is that the building is right in the center of the undergrad campus -- thus, you'll be sharing the same local bars with undergrads. That said, the nearby neighborhood of Shadyside is often considered to be a hotspot for young professionals and a lot of graduate students will live in/go out in Shadyside.

Yeah I've already discovered Hemmingway's Bar, across from the law school. Cheap beer, but MAN does it get packed with undergrads!!!
That's why I'm moving to Regent Square.
LILFOLKSINGER...I didn't know that...that's a great deal!

Yup...the wife & I had the Buffalo option as well.
Pittsburgh seemed like a much cooler town.

It's a WAY cooler town. As someone who grew up in Western New York, trust me, you made the better cultural choice.
I'll always love the Bills, but the Steelers are competing for the #1 place in my football heart.
