If you did not see it, you should have gotten a picture of the sculpture garden around back, and also the courtyard around the side.

I gotta say, the building was way nicer than I was ever led to believe. Most pictures do not really do it justice. I liked it a lot better than I liked Cornell's. The renovations they just completed either turned out extremely well or the building is yet another victim of misinformation (or a little bit of both). The landscaping was pretty too, but I cannot imagine how good it looks when everything really starts to bloom.

I caught the sculpture garden at the last minute after my camera had died! And, I definitely agree that my pictures don't even begin to show how amazing the facilities are.

I wasn't really considering Duke too much before I went to ASW, but now it's definitely one of my top three choices.

So clearly Dook's masterful citywide plot to hide how lame Durham is, how stuck up the student body is, and how horrible Duke grads' job prospects are was carried out flawlessly. They are so evil...

Oh, and the admitted students I hung out with were kickass. Especially the folks who came to the townie bar and wandered through Durham at 2:00am looking for a pizza joint! We definitely need to coordinate our school decisions.

+1 :D

I can't really add much more to this conservation other than a simple concurrence on most everything that's already been said.

I wasn't really considering Duke until this weekend, but it's definitely a top choice for me now.

So many misconceptions bit the dust over the trip, and the quality of life there is going to be hard to beat for a T14 law school.

I was impressed to say the least.

For those who didn't know, I was the short, stocky guy with the camo hat who wouldn't shut up about fishing, hunting, and Washington State. I apologize haha...

You had a camo hat? I don't remember you wearing it...

It was brown canvas with camo under the bill...I guess it wasn't that apparent.

dittos all around. I wasn't seriously considering Duke. Now I'd be hard pressed to go anywhere else. If I hear back from them about a scholly, I'm sold.

I can't imagine any reason why someone would not be able to do exactly what they wanted for a career, with the possible exception of academia. And for that, it seems only a few years of work experience would be a prerequisite. Or just be exceptionally brilliant.

Anyone agree with this characterization? UVA alums extraordinarily support the law school, Duke alums extraordinarily support each other. To qualify that, Duke does have incredible fundraising success. For instance, Blair Kauffman (Yale law librarian and professor of law at Yale) quoted straight out of Duke Law Magazine:

"Those of us in the library profession have long admired Duke Law School and the Duke Law Library. We always know that Duke is one step ahead of everybody else...they've done it, and Dick Danner has written about it." Wow.

Anyone know what the directions are to get travel reimbursed?

I really enjoyed the weekend. I met a lot of you and it was fantastic! In D-Town we don't f*** around!

I went in kinda determined to be a bit of a cheerleader anyway - being from Durham I have a need I guess to defend the area to people. It really is a great place to live. I'm glad we had nice weather this weekend!

I said to a few people Friday that I felt UVA maybe put on a little bit more of a show, but that I felt overall more impressed by Duke. I didn't really like the slower pace of Friday morning at Duke (i.e. the sun in our eyes for a while and sitting in the same chairs for four hours) but panel discussions really are never my thing. It did serve as a good introduction to several faculty.

I went to a class with another TLSer on Thursday and it was really great. I had had a long week and was exhausted but the class really held my attention. It was fascinating. I guess this is a good sign!

Lunch Friday was fantastic, and the social events Friday were fun. I loved everything about the reception.

Much fewer parents!!! And boy do I love the idea of the smaller class. I kept running into the same current students (who were great, btw) over and over so I think that reinforces that there just aren't that many people there. And I truly do feel that there will be no cutthroatness, which is awesome.

The facilities and the program are unparalleled. I've got two more visits to make but it will be hard to surpass Duke.

To those of you I met, keep in touch! To those of you who don't want to visit or dismissed Duke offhand, it's your loss.

This was my first ASW and Duke set the bar pretty high.

I was really impressed by the people I met; admitted students, current students, faculty, staff etc..

Although the panels on Friday were a little much to be held back to back like they were, the mock classes were interesting and the shindig at George's Garage was a lot of fun - so much fun that there were only about 10 people at the run through the Duke forest the next morning... :)

Duke was already in my top 3 and is currently at the top of the list...

It's really awesome to hear that so many others enjoyed their visits, too. Now I'm worried about over-enrollment. :P

Oh, I didn't even realize you were a TLS poster. We talked on the apartment buses, (my hoodie matched part of my username  )

I agree that pictures of the law school and (sometimes) the campus don't do it justice. Amazing place. I'm uploading my pics now.

I agree with everyone, had an amazing weekend. Came away incredibly impressed and almost 100% sure of my decision now.

With that said.. I missed out on the apartment complex tour and would like to hear the opinions of anyone who went on that????

I was actually just about to post this same question. Could anyone list the (I think 4?) apartments that the tour covered, provide any amenities/pictures, and general opinions? Thanks!

My Duke Law pictures thread has some pics of the apartments. I can't remember their names at the moment though.

I thought they were great. It's very different than any housing options I had during undergrad, and while they're a bit too "suburbia" in some ways, I love the idea of a nice, safe community with a low COL. Dog parks, ponds, pools, tennis courts, etc were all over the place, which was nice.

I will third the request, and add that I would like to find a pet friendly appartment, so if anyone has heard of a good one I would love it if you could let me know.

And I guess I should start searching for potential roommates.

I think all of them said they were pet friendly, although a few might have an initial pet fee (I don't think any had monthly pet payments)

True. All were VERY pet friendly having either no restrictions or very high weight restrictions (50-60lbs +) / fairly lax breed restrictions.

What did you all think of the lofts at lakeview? The website makes it look very nice and it seems to have a feel of urban living that you would not get in some "suburban" type places.

That sounds great, another reason to love Duke. My pup is not huge, but he ain't under 25 lbs either, so the lax restrictions are good to know. He is a Black/Golden lab mix, so I doubt the breed restrictions apply to him.

"Aggressive" breeds were the only restrictions I remember. It sounds like you'll be fine.

I'm gonna try to get on a scanner this morning and post some of the info in our packets up here, especially the second year summer employment for 2009. It's not like I actually work at work, ha!
