If you look at hiring percentages, Yale gets more V5 placements as a percentage of the class than any other school, and that's even with the most capable Yale graduates presumably going to the best clerkships/public interest positions possible. Firm preparedness and firm capability are two entirely separate issues--I would suspect that hiring partners are interested in the latter far more than the former, not to mention how limited the number of Yalies are for each given year. They like the prestige of the Yale degree, and they know that most YLS admits were also admitted to SLS and HLS.

Interesting take, bgc, but true. In fact, my Dad used to complain that while his old V5 firm more aggressively recruited YLS grads than those from HLS, they had a difficult time convincing them to work for the firm because 1) Yalies could go anywhere and do anything they want and they knew it, and 2) because of self-selection, they were so damned few of them. Any time his old firm successfully hired a Yalie, it was usually a cause for celebration. :)

That made an impression on me when I was in high school and he was telling me all this. Because of his admiration of YLS and Yalies in general, it's been my dream to attend YLS.

Any chance your dad might be exaggerating a bit? V5 firms routinely hire Yale grads...

how did this semi-ridiculous pissing contest between yale and stanford admits get in here in the first place - i think i'm gonna go make a(nother) why yale thread so that people who want to debate the obvious can have it out over there

It's funny cause I thought I said something that was highly uncontroversial. Apparently not

yes, by all means, take the marshall/rhodes instead of sitting on yale's waitlist - agreed - /debate

[and in closing let's note that IF someone were stupid enough to ride the waitlist instead of taking the marshall/rhodes, they might ALSO be stupid enough to be doing it for reasons other than wanting biglaw a year earlier; i mean, good god, we've already decided they're stupid, but that's no reason to paint their motives in such a one-dimensional, lowest-common-denominator way]

I guess if you really want to work at your Dad's law firm, you have no choice but to go to yls since he won't hire graduates from any other school (especially hls) because they're all such dummies. I don't understand how people who didn't apply to yls or those that chose other schools over them didn't see how superhumanly special "yalies" are :?: :?: :?: :?:

It also sounds to me like your dad made your decision to go to yale cause it's really all about what your dad thinks.

HAZMAT, no way do I want to work for my father! He's a hard-driving bastard.

I want to do my own thing, and while I'm not sure what I want to do yet, I don't think it's going to be biglaw and it ain't working for my dad either. I have bigger aspirations than that. I do want to clerk, that's a definite. But beyond that, it's kinda hazy. :?:

I was just trying to make a point that you only make what you will out of attending HYS. It's often the self-selection that's a gotcha. Going to YLS is certainly not that big of a hurdle to biglaw as people make it out to be, just saying.

legend, I think my father was saying that "tongue-in-cheek" but sometimes I wonder. :?

I was the guilty party that prompted the derailment when I chose to defend generic applicants that might prefer to ride Yale's WL as opposed to taking advantage of Rhodes/Marshall opportunity. Sorry, everyone!

Not a waiting on Yale comment (since the good folks in New Haven unceremoniously ended that wait a couple weeks ago), but figured I'd let people in here know that I ended up choosing HLS over SLS (on the grounds that my brothers both live in Boston, and I like the library better, not any sort of judgment on Stanford, which I love). I'm deferring enrollment for a year, but I'm sure I'll see some of you all up in Cambridge in 2010!

If this is of any encouragement to those who still might be waiting, I just withdrew from YLS last week.

<3 <3 <3 - if you can round up about 100 others to do the same, i'm sure the tls waitlist crew would find a very special place for you in our hearts (and wallets)

I'm regretting staying on the waiting list a little bit. I'm not sure if I'll be able to stay positive all summer watching other people get accepted off of it. I do expect there to be some movement this year now that Harvard and Stanford are both on pass-fail systems.

wait, you're regretting staying on it?

It's never too late to send in that withdrawal letter, buddy. You'd have my gratitude... but then again I'd just as readily take your Harvard seat : )

Ha. I guess that's true. I do really want this, but I know I'm not going to get it, and I know I'll be crabby if somebody else does.
