does anyone know what (and when) I should send stuff to Penn? I got a .2 higher GPA this semester, but aside from perhaps a new transcript I don't know what else I am supposed to submit. They informed me that I was deferred around 3 weeks ago. I already wrote a pretty good Why Penn essay. Thanks!

I'm guessing by "deferred" you mean you were waitlisted? If you've already written the optional essay, you might want to consider sending in an extra recommendation letter. And, of course, any updates about yourself or what you're now involved with. Good luck!

no.....a deferral is different from a waitlist, although I'm still trying to parse exactly how they ARE different. Penn is my top choice :(. I would give them another LOR, but I've already given them FOUR, and a certain point you just start running out of people to ask.

From my understanding of my experience and observation of others on TLS, a deferral is where your application was probably submitted early, they have reviewed your application, but have yet to make a decision. It means your application will be looked at again, and if you wish to send supplemental information, you may do so. It is after a second review that a final decision will be given. A waitlist is conditional, in that more seats must open up in order for you to receive an acceptance. Also, it looks like (at least with UCLA), if you can increase your numbers significantly (even marginally for some cases), it greatly increases your chances of being pulled from the waitlist. Many people don't hear a final decision from a waitlist until after April, while final decisions for deferrals can still turn into accepts, rejects or waitlists, and will (hopefully) come before April.

This info is compiled from statistics and stories from many applicants from many different schools, so Penn's process may be different... but I hope this is somewhat helpful.

I agree, defer and waitlist are not the same.
