 Post subject: Harvard and Laptops

i read profs at harvard do not allow laptops in class for note taking, is this true? i type a LOT faster than i write and relied on my laptop for notetaking all through my undergrad yrs, it'd be a huge hassle if i couldnt...and i was about to buy a new one...anyone go to HLS know?

This semester, 3 of mine were fine with laptops, 1 wasn't. Really, like borntorun says, it depends on the professor. This should be the least of your worries right now :)

My section also had 3 classes with laptops and 1 without. Some sections had the reverse. Some sections had no laptops in any classes. It's not predictable until you know your professors. But there's a good chance you'll have at least one class where laptops are not allowed. If you're lucky, it will be a class where you don't really need to take that many notes, such as Leg Reg. (Though, again, that could depend on the teaching style of the professor).

Frankly it's ridiculous that any professor would be banning laptops in this day and age.

Not as ridiculous as it may seem. In college classes I've taught, I've found that, on average, even exceptional students are less involved in the class when using laptops than when taking notes by hand. If the point of the class is participation, rather than transcription, a ban on laptops might make perfect sense.
