I was wondering...

Could you transfer as a part-time student at a LS to a fulltime student at some other (possibly higher ranking) school?

Yes, it's possible but largely depends on the policies of the school you are trying to transfer to. Things change from year to year. You'll have to call schools and ask.

Remember that you need high 1L grades to transfer to a higher ranked school. Nothing is a sure thing with law school grades...very unpredictable.

I don't see how, as a part-time student, you would be able to accumulate the necessary credits in just two semesters.

post-coffee edit: Unless, of course, you are applying after your second year as a part-timer. I seem to remember a few of the T-14's having something about this in their FAQ's, might want to poke around a bit.

Some schools will admit you conditionally on the completion of one or two summer courses with a minimum GPA in those courses. You can also try to see if your current school will allow you to tack on an extra course or two during Spring of your 1L year. Whatever you do, do not tell the current school that you are doing this to increase transfer prospects.

I know one student that went PT at a tier 2/3 to a T14 in this exact scenario. He was able to make up the remaining credits by taking only one extra class at the new school, and he didn't have to do any summer classes.

Another way is to take an extra semester at the new school. Some schools will allow you to do this. You graduate in December instead of May/June.

Yes, some schools do have strict policies re: minimum credits. Others state their policy but will make occasional exceptions. Others have no minimum credit policy at all.

Bottom line is that you have to call the schools and ask. There is no general rule.
