Post subject: LYING in your personal statement (don't do it)

Is this worthwhile if you can pull this off? There's no way that admissions can find out, plus, even my mother suggested this.

EDIT: Don't do it. It's morally lacking and you'll regret it. Plus, mother does not always know best.

Well if your mother suggested it, then it must be a good idea!

No wonder people think lawyers are sleazy.

Since you are interested in practicing Law I would avoid beginning your career with lies. However it probably depends on what sort of lie we are talking about. If you are exaggerating the importance of a "life altering" experience you actually had then that's probably not a big deal, but if you are just straight up inventing a struggle against adversity or something that is probably not a good idea.

After being admitted, your personal statement probably goes into a paper shredder anyways. I mean, I'm shocked that this has never occurred to me before!

Well, if you're mother suggested it...

Isn't this the second thread you've started on this subject? Not only is showing shaky moral fiber before going to law school just plain obnoxious, it's unethical to lie. While adcomms might not be able to find out the truth, good luck passing the character and fitness portion of the bar.

God I hope there's karma in this world.

Really dude? I suppose a few minor exaggerations are OK (come on, we all do it on our resumes), but a LIE, like "I have HIV" when you are fit as a fiddle?

Doubtful man. Be honest and let your numbers talk for you.

I don't think saying "I have HIV" is going to help you anyway

I'm dead serious. This came up last night at dinner. I don't really have anything outstanding to say about my life, and I mentioned this to my mother who said, "Well make something up!"

I don't think your PS goes into the trash can - it is part of your application, so good luck with the Bar!

If this is real, you are going to hell for being a liar.
If this is fake, you are going to an even lower level of hell for being a troll.

This probably happens all the time. Think about it.

People probably to go hell all the time too!

On a serious note, you need to ask yourself why you are going to law school if you are willing to violate one of the major ethical norms of the field just to get in.

Can you get away with it? Probably. Should you do it? No.

That's my conclusion, too. I thought about this all last night and today and I decided that lying would only come back to haunt me later on in life. It's not a good habit to get into. I'll definitely try to work with what I have. Although I'm sure people stretch the truth all the time in personal statements.

If it took you this long to reach the right decision, I am skeptical about your ability to succeed.

Not every potential ethical pitfall will wait 36 hours for you to make up your mind, and this one ought to have been a no-brainer.

Ethics Smethics, do as you wish man. You guys are crazy if you think the most successful people in this world have never violated morals/ethics etc. Shit, I estimate 95% of the politicians are dirty in some way (We all know Obama has a knack for choosing tax evaders to his team) and the most successful business people are ruthless. Just be prepared for any possible consequences and do as you wish.

In America, first you get the money, then you get the power, then you can lie on your personal statement.

Not the other way around.
