it's weird how tragedies on such large scales become cliche.

i've read several personal statements about the effects of hurricane katrina. i would say reactions to 9/11 are just as valid. if you have something compelling to say, just say it.

Certain popular literature on the subject seems to indicate that it isn't a good idea.

agreed. unless you are a brilliant writer or someone in your immediate family was directly involved stay away from this for sure.

I would say unless you were:

a) at one of the sites when it happened or in the direct aftermath (helping)

or

b) made a major life change based on it (joined the military, etc.)

then you can probably find a better topic.

Even though you stated you merely want to mention it, I think this advice still holds. Why invoke it unless there is some unique connection; remember it is a personal statement.
