Post subject: scrabble in personal statement?

For someone like myself with a weak resume', weak softs, weak work experience, etc., I am having difficulty thinking of a good topic for my personal statement. What some would say is truly unique about me is a love for the game of Scrabble ever since I entered grade school. I was wondering what the fine members of TLS thought about a personal statement centered around a board game. I could talk about how it went from a fun hobby, at a time I could barely spell, to mean much more for me. I would show the joy I get from competition and the kind of analytical thought processes that goes into being an expert Scrabble player. I suppose I could also mention helping to start my high school Scrabble club even though that was upwards of 7 years ago. I can't imagine admissions officers see any Scrabble personal statements, but that may be because it's a terrible idea. Thoughts??? (3.0/161/hoping to squeak into a school on the edge of the top 50)

I kind of like it. I find it a little strange which might be nice after reading thousands of boring personal statements.

I think it COULD be good, but you would have to craft it masterfully. I can see something like this:

First paragraph, you talk about the game and how "solving problems" and competing and such in Scrabble has been a passion of yours... tournaments, games with friends family (a way to get closer to them), etc...

Then you can talk about each paragraph as if you were playing a game... for example, your second paragraph could be something like: "I look down and I have the worst letters possible: XXXXX. Wow no vowels. But it spells out " XXX XX"."
you could do this for a few paragraphs, and use the words to describe something about yourself, your passion, your hobby, etc.
good luck!

I cant tell if THIS is satire or not. This could be a great personal statement, like the above poster said its all about how you craft it.

I'm going to agree with the majority on this one. If you can write your PS to show how you developed as a scrabble player as concomitant with your development as a person, and how that highlights your intellectual cur-- but caveat scriptor, don't get cheesy with it. Write up a rough draft and give it to someone who is always brutally honest with you.
